# Microsoft Clipchamp

Application: Microsoft Corporation

Also called clipchamp, windows clipchamp

Microsoft Corporation, Creative

A Windows 11 video editor Microsoft acquired. The process is Clipchamp.exe. It is in-box on many PCs. It is not Adobe Premiere Pro.

## What you need to know

Clipchamp is the Windows 11 editor. Premiere is Adobe's NLE.

Microsoft acquired Clipchamp and ships it on many PCs. Adobe Premiere Pro is a different vendor and a heavier timeline. Clipchamp.exe is not Premiere Pro.exe.

**Still current?**: Yes, see Current status

Feex says

If Clipchamp.exe is the editor Windows already installed, I would not tell you to install Premiere for a short caption job. A long multi-cam timeline is still Premiere.

## What is Microsoft Clipchamp?

Microsoft Clipchamp is a simpler video editor. Clipchamp.exe is the Windows app. Adobe Premiere Pro is Adobe Premiere Pro.exe. A two-hour multi-cam cut is still a Premiere job.

## If you have never used it

If Windows 11 already has a purple video editor tile, this is Clipchamp, not Premiere Pro. Open it from Start or the Microsoft Store. Microsoft acquired Clipchamp in 2021 and ships it on many consumer PCs. Adobe Premiere Pro is a Creative Cloud timeline NLE you install separately.

## What is it used for?

**Short cuts and captions**

Social clips and auto captions Microsoft markets. Premiere is the long-form sibling.

**Stock and templates**

In-app stock can need a Microsoft account. Adobe Stock is a different store.

**Export from a Windows 11 PC**

In-box for many SKUs. You do not need Creative Cloud to trim a phone clip.

## Who is it for?

- Windows 11 users who want a simple editor
- People who should not buy Premiere for a one-minute trim
- Anyone comparing this tile with Filmora or iMovie memories from another OS

## Current status

Actively developed as a Microsoft Store / in-box app. This article is the Windows 11 Clipchamp app, not only clipchamp.com in a browser.

## How old is it?

Clipchamp began around 2020 as a browser editor. Microsoft bought it in 2021 and put a Windows 11 app on many PCs. Premiere Pro dates to 2003 as Adobe's NLE. They are not the same timeline.

## System requirements

Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

### Minimum

| Operating system | A current supported Windows 10 or Windows 11 release, per the vendor |
| ---------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| RAM | Enough for Windows plus this app. Heavy projects want more. |

## Resource profile

- **CPU demand**: Follows what you open inside the app

**RAM demand**: Follows documents, tabs, or libraries

## Installed processes

These executables belong to this product when it is installed.

| Clipchamp.exe | Windows video editor |
| ------------- | -------------------- |

## Startup components

Clipchamp starts when you open a project. It should not start with Windows.

## File locations

| Typical install | C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\Clipchamp.Clipchamp\_\*\\ |
| --------------- | ------------------------------------------------------ |

## File formats

MP4, project files Clipchamp uses

## Common problems

### Export watermark or 1080p limits

Some features want a Microsoft account or a paid Clipchamp plan. That is not a Premiere license.

### People install Premiere because Clipchamp felt small

That can be the right upgrade. It is a different installer, not a Clipchamp repair.

## Getting unstuck

### Open Clipchamp from Start on Windows 11 before you download anything

Many PCs already have it. clipchamp.com in a browser is the web cousin.

### Install from the Microsoft Store if the tile is missing

A "Clipchamp free editor" search ad is the wrong file.

### If you needed nested sequences and a full effects graph, use Premiere

Clipchamp will not become Premiere Pro by updating Windows.

## Alternatives

Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, and Photos video overlap. Premiere is the sibling this article is not.
