# Microsoft Project

Application: Microsoft Corporation

Also called ms project, winproj, microsoft project desktop

Microsoft Corporation, Productivity

Microsoft's desktop project scheduling app. The process is WINPROJ.EXE. It is a separate SKU from Office. It is not Microsoft Planner.

## What you need to know

Desktop Project is WINPROJ.EXE. Planner is a different Microsoft product.

Microsoft Project builds schedules in .mpp files. It is licensed apart from Office. Microsoft Planner is a web task board, not this executable.

- **What is it?**: Project scheduling

**Still current?**: Yes, see Current status

Feex says

If WINPROJ.EXE is missing, I would check the Project SKU, not the Word installer. Planner in a browser is not this Gantt client.

## What is Microsoft Project?

Microsoft Project is a desktop scheduler for Gantt charts, dependencies, and .mpp files. The Windows executable is WINPROJ.EXE. Planner and Project for the web are other Microsoft products.

## If you have never used it

If someone sent an .mpp schedule, you need desktop Project, not Planner on the web and not Excel. Planner is a Microsoft 365 task board. WINPROJ.EXE is the Gantt and critical-path client. A Word-only 365 install will not include it.

## What is it used for?

**Gantt schedules**

Tasks, links, and baselines in an .mpp file. Excel can hold a date list. It is not this scheduling engine.

**Resource and cost plans**

Assign people and rates. Planner boards do not calculate the same critical path.

**Publish to Project Online or Project Server**

Some orgs still save desktop files to a Project server. That is not a Planner bucket.

## Who is it for?

- Schedulers who live in .mpp files
- PMs whose tenant bought Project Plan 3 or 5
- Anyone who opened Planner and wondered where the Gantt went

## Current status

Actively developed. Microsoft also ships Project for the web. This article is desktop WINPROJ.EXE.

## How old is it?

Microsoft Project for DOS dates to 1984. It predates Microsoft 365 and Planner. Current desktop Project still uses WINPROJ.EXE. Project for the web is a different client.

## Versions

## System requirements

Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

### Minimum

| Operating system | A current Windows release Microsoft lists for Project desktop |
| ---------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| RAM | 4 GB class, per Microsoft 365 Apps language. Large .mpp files want more |

## Resource profile

- **CPU demand**: Follows what you open inside the app

**RAM demand**: Follows documents, tabs, or libraries

## Installed processes

These executables belong to this product when it is installed.

| WINPROJ.EXE | Desktop Project |
| ----------- | --------------- |

## Startup components

Project starts when you open a schedule. It should not start with Windows.

## File locations

| Typical install | C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\WINPROJ.EXE |
| --------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------- |

## File formats

MPP, MPT, XML, PDF

## Common problems

### Project missing from Office setup

Microsoft 365 Apps that include Word still omit WINPROJ.EXE unless you add a Project plan.

### People look for a Gantt in Planner

Planner is not desktop Project. Open WINPROJ or Project for the web, depending on the file type.

## Getting unstuck

### Confirm you have a Project license, not only Office

Project Plan 3 or 5 and Project Professional include desktop Project. Planner is included more widely and is not this exe.

### Open an .mpp in Project, not Excel

Excel may import a table. It will not keep Project calendars and constraints.

### Install from the Project product page after the admin assigns a license

Do not download winproj.exe from a filename site.

## Alternatives

Planner, Project for the web, and a spreadsheet overlap for simple lists. They do not open every desktop .mpp feature.
