# Midori

Application: Astian

Also called midori browser, astian midori

Astian, Browsers

A lightweight browser that moved from WebKit GTK to a Windows-friendly build. On Windows the process is midori.exe.

## What you need to know

Midori is Astian's browser. It is not Chrome.

midori.exe is the Windows Midori build. chrome.exe is Chrome. Early Midori was WebKit GTK. Current Windows Midori is a later line.

**Still current?**: Yes, see Current status

Feex says

If midori.exe is open, I would treat it as Astian Midori, not Chrome. A 2010 GTK guide will not match this Windows build.

## What is Midori?

Midori is Astian's desktop browser. The Windows executable is midori.exe. It is not Google Chrome and not the old GTK-only package.

## If you have never used it

If you want Midori, this is Astian's browser, not Chrome. Early Midori was a WebKit GTK Linux browser. Current Windows builds are a later, Windows-friendly line. Download it from astian.org/midori-browser. The process is midori.exe. chrome.exe is Chrome.

## What is it used for?

**Everyday browsing in a smaller-branded window**

Daily tabs without Chrome branding. Site compatibility depends on the current Midori engine, not on chrome.exe.

**A lightweight-branded alternative**

Astian still markets Midori as lighter-feeling. That is branding, not a Foxhole benchmark.

**A second browser profile**

midori.exe keeps its own profile. Uninstalling Chrome does not remove it.

## Who is it for?

- People who remember Midori from Linux and want the Windows build
- Users who were pointed at Astian Midori
- Anyone who assumed it was Chrome

## Current status

Midori (2007) is a current web browser from Astian. The vendor still points Windows users at https://astian.org/midori-browser/.

## How old is it?

Midori started in 2007 as a lightweight WebKit GTK browser. Astian later continued the name on a Windows-friendly build. A 2010 Elementary OS Midori tip is not today's midori.exe.

| --------------- | -------------------------------- |

## File formats

HTML, PDF, PNG, JPEG

## Common problems

### Old Linux how-tos

GTK Midori settings do not map 1:1 to the current Windows build. Use Astian pages.

### People close chrome.exe to quit Midori

Wrong exe. midori.exe is this product.

## Getting unstuck

### Install from astian.org/midori-browser

A Midori turbo pack is junk.

### Use astian.org/midori-en for current help

Arch Wiki Midori pages can describe the old GTK app.

### Confirm midori.exe, not chrome.exe

Open file location. An Astian or Midori folder is this product.

## Alternatives

Firefox if you want Gecko. Chrome or Edge for stock Chromium. Falkon if you want a KDE QtWebEngine browser instead.
