# Mozilla VPN

Application: Mozilla

Also called firefox vpn, firefox private network, mozilla vpn

Mozilla, Security

A Mozilla-branded VPN powered by Mullvad. The window is Mozilla VPN.exe. It is not Firefox.

## What you need to know

Mozilla VPN.exe is a Mullvad-powered client. It is not Firefox.

Mozilla VPN is Mozilla's paid VPN on Mullvad's network. Firefox is the browser. mullvad.exe is Mullvad's own account-number client. Tailscale is a mesh.

- **What is it?**: Mozilla VPN powered by Mullvad. Not Firefox

**Same as mullvad.exe?**: No. Different account and exe

**Ships with Firefox?**: No. Separate download

Feex says

If firefox.exe is the only Mozilla process, I would not expect a VPN tunnel. Mozilla VPN.exe is a separate install. I would also not call it Tailscale, and I would not enter a Mullvad account number in this app.

## What is Mozilla VPN?

Mozilla VPN is a Mozilla-branded client on Mullvad's network. Mozilla VPN.exe is the Windows process. Firefox is a different product.

## If you have never used it

If you wanted Mozilla's VPN, this is Mozilla VPN, not Firefox. Download it from mozilla.org/products/vpn. Mozilla VPN.exe is the tunnel app. It is powered by Mullvad. firefox.exe is the browser. Mullvad.exe is Mullvad's own client with an account number. This is not Tailscale.

## What is it used for?

**Mozilla-account VPN**

You pay Mozilla and sign in with a Mozilla account. Mullvad's own app uses an account number instead.

**Mullvad-powered servers**

The network is Mullvad. The exe and billing are Mozilla. That is the sibling-swap sentence.

**Not a Firefox setting**

Installing Firefox does not install this VPN. Multi-Account Containers are a browser feature, not Mozilla VPN.exe.

## Who is it for?

- People who want a Mozilla bill on a Mullvad-powered VPN
- Users who opened Firefox looking for a Connect button
- Anyone comparing this to mullvad.exe

## Current status

Actively sold where Mozilla offers it. This article is the Windows VPN app, not Firefox.

## How old is it?

Mozilla shipped Firefox Private Network, then Mozilla VPN in 2020 on Mullvad's network. Current Windows builds are Mozilla VPN.exe. A 2019 extension-only FPN is not this app.

## Common problems

### Firefox installed, VPN missing

The browser does not include Mozilla VPN.exe. Download the VPN product page.

### Mullvad number will not sign in

This app wants a Mozilla account. Use mullvad.exe if you paid Mullvad directly.

## Getting unstuck

### Install from mozilla.org/products/vpn

firefox.com is the browser. mullvad.net is the other client.

### Sign in with the Mozilla account

A Mullvad account number belongs in mullvad.exe.

### Disconnect other VPNs

Two tunnels fight over the default route.

## Alternatives

Mullvad VPN if you want the account-number client. Firefox if you meant the browser. Tailscale if you wanted a mesh.
