# mpv

Application: mpv

Also called mpv player, mpv.io

mpv, System

A keyboard-first media player that grew from MPlayer and mplayer2. The process is mpv.exe. It is not VLC.

## What you need to know

mpv is keys and a config file. VLC is a full desktop window.

mpv.exe grew from MPlayer. It plays files with little chrome. VideoLAN VLC is a different project with a different settings tree and a different icon.

- **What is it?**: A keyboard-first media player

**Same as VLC?**: No. Different project and UI

**Need a codec pack?**: Usually no

Feex says

If a file opens in a bare window and keys do everything, that is mpv, not VLC. I would read the manual before I hunt a skin, and I would take the build mpv.io lists.

## What is mpv?

mpv is a media player with a thin UI and a thick config culture. On Windows the usual image is mpv.exe.

## If you have never used it

If you want a player you drive with keys and a config file, this is mpv. The project documents Windows builds on mpv.io/installation. There is no orange cone and no playlist-first VideoLAN window. Drop a file on mpv.exe or use Open with. Learn the keys from the manual.

## What is it used for?

**Keyboard playback**

Seek, audio cycle, and subtitle keys from the manual. VLC can do some of this, but mpv expects the keyboard first.

**Config and scripts**

mpv.conf and lua scripts live in the user folder. That is not VideoLAN’s Tools > Preferences tree.

**Odd files and streams**

Containers and network streams MPlayer’s descendants still open. You still do not need a codec pack.

## Who is it for?

- People who want keys and a config file more than a toolbar
- Users coming from MPlayer or mplayer2
- Anyone who should not download a random mpv.exe from a forum

## Current status

mpv (2013) is a current video player from mpv. The vendor still points Windows users at https://mpv.io/installation/.

## How old is it?

mpv forked from mplayer2 in 2013, which itself came from MPlayer. It is newer than VLC 2001 and older than a random Electron wrapper. A 2005 MPlayer command line is the ancestor, not the current mpv.conf.

## Versions

## System requirements

Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

### Minimum

| Operating system | A current supported Windows 10 or Windows 11 release, per the vendor |
| ---------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| RAM | Light for 1080p. 4K and high-bit-rate files want more RAM |

## Resource profile

- **CPU demand**: Software decode and shaders

**GPU demand**: When a hardware vo is on

## Installed processes

These executables belong to this product when it is installed.

| mpv.exe | Main Windows executable |
| ------- | ----------------------- |

## Startup components

mpv does not start with Windows unless you added a shortcut. It starts when you open a file.

## File locations

| Typical install | C:\Program Files\mpv\\ |
| --------------- | ---------------------- |

## File formats

MKV, MP4, WebM, streams the manual documents

## Common problems

### No obvious UI

That is the product. Right-click or the manual, not a missing install.

### Unofficial Windows zip

mpv.io lists how Windows builds are produced. A random mpv.exe on a blog is the wrong file.

## Getting unstuck

### Start from mpv.io/installation

The project explains Windows packages. Do not take the first search-ad zip.

### Check mpv.conf if OSD or decode looks wrong

A leftover config can force a bad vo or hwdec. Rename the config as a test before you reinstall a GPU driver.

### Read input.conf before blaming the keyboard

Keys are remappable. The stable manual lists the defaults.

## Alternatives

VLC if you want menus. MPC-HC if you want a Classic context menu. Films & TV for a simple Store MP4.

## Related hardware

Hardware decode is a vo and hwdec choice. A current GPU driver helps 4K. Software decode still works.
