# Neovim

Application: Neovim

Also called nvim, neovim windows

Neovim, Productivity

A Vim fork with a modern architecture. The Windows process is nvim.exe. It is not Visual Studio Code.

## What you need to know

nvim.exe is Neovim. Code.exe is Visual Studio Code.

Neovim is a Vim fork. The Windows build is nvim.exe. Visual Studio Code is Microsoft's Electron editor. Cursor and Windsurf are AI editors on the VS Code family. They are not this modal editor.

- **What is it?**: Vim fork for Windows as nvim.exe

**Same as VS Code?**: No. Different editor model

**Need a GUI?**: No. A terminal is enough

Feex says

If nvim.exe is missing from PATH, I would install the Neovim release, not VS Code. Code.exe will not read your init.lua. This is the Vim fork.

## What is Neovim?

Neovim is a modal editor. nvim.exe is the Windows binary. It is not VS Code, not Visual Studio, and not Notepad++.

## If you have never used it

If a guide said install Neovim, get the Windows build from neovim.io. nvim.exe is this editor. It is a Vim fork you run in a terminal or a GUI wrapper. Code.exe is VS Code. vim.exe from a different port is not automatically this project.

## What is it used for?

**Edit in a terminal**

nvim file.txt. VS Code is a GUI folder editor. The motions are Vim, not Ctrl+K chords from Code.

**Lua config and plugins**

init.lua and lazy.nvim-style plugins. VS Code extensions will not load here.

**Language servers via LSP**

Neovim speaks LSP. That server can still be the same typescript-language-server VS Code uses. The editor process is nvim.exe.

## Who is it for?

- People who already think in Vim motions
- Users who want a terminal editor on Windows
- Anyone who installed VS Code and thought they had Neovim

## Current status

Neovim (2014) is a current modal editor from Neovim. The vendor still points Windows users at https://neovim.io/.

## How old is it?

Neovim forked Vim in 2014. It is younger than classic Vim and older than VS Code's peak. Current 0.10-line Windows builds are the product. A 1990s vi tutorial still teaches the motions. The host is nvim.exe here.

## Versions

Major channels first. Exact build numbers are not all verified here.

nvim stable

nightly

## System requirements

Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

### Minimum

| Operating system | A current 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11 release, per Neovim releases |
| ---------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| RAM | The editor is tiny. LSP clients want more |

## Resource profile

- **CPU demand**: Follows what you open inside the app

**RAM demand**: Follows documents, tabs, or libraries

## Installed processes

These executables belong to this product when it is installed.

| nvim.exe | Neovim for Windows |
| -------- | ------------------ |

## Startup components

nvim.exe starts when you open a terminal or a GUI wrapper. It is not a Windows service.

## File locations

| Typical install | C:\Program Files\Neovim\\ |
| --------------- | ------------------------- |

## File formats

any text, Lua config

## Common problems

### People open VS Code and look for :q

That command is Neovim or Vim. Code.exe uses a different UI.

### vim.exe versus nvim.exe

A Vim for Windows port is a different binary. This article is Neovim from neovim.io.

## Getting unstuck

### nvim --version and where.exe nvim

Expect Program Files\Neovim or a winget path. Microsoft VS Code is Code.exe.

### Install from neovim.io or winget Neovim.Neovim

A random nvim zip next to a crack is junk.

### Check :checkhealth inside Neovim

That report is this editor. VS Code Developer Tools will not help.

## Alternatives

Classic Vim if you want vim.exe. VS Code if you want a GUI. Helix is another modal editor.
