Opera Norway's gaming-skinned Chromium browser with GX Control RAM and CPU limiters. The Windows process is still opera.exe.

## What you need to know

Opera GX is the limiter skin. Regular Opera does not ship GX Control.

Opera GX is a separate Chromium install with a gaming theme and sliders that cap RAM, CPU, and network. The process is still opera.exe. The folder should say Opera GX, not Programs\Opera.

If you installed GX to keep a game from starving, I would look at GX Control sliders first. Regular Opera has no those RAM and CPU caps, and chrome.exe is a different product.

## What is Opera GX?

Opera GX is Opera Norway's gaming-oriented Chromium browser. It is a different install from regular Opera. The executable name is still opera.exe.

## If you have never used it

If a streamer said "get Opera GX", this is the gaming-skinned Opera, not the regular Opera sidebar browser. Download it from opera.com/gx. GX Control lets you cap RAM, CPU, and network so a game keeps headroom. The process is still opera.exe. Regular Opera lives in a different folder and has no those sliders.

## What is it used for?

**Web browsing during a game**

Twitch, Discord web, and store pages in a Chromium window next to a game.

**GX Control limiters**

RAM, CPU, and network sliders Opera GX ships. Regular Opera does not have this control panel.

**Gaming theme and sounds**

Optional GX mods and keyboard sounds. They are cosmetics, not a performance engine.

## Who is it for?

- Players who want a browser they can throttle beside a game
- People who already use Opera GX social features
- Anyone who mixed it up with regular Opera because both say opera.exe

## Current status

Actively developed. This article is the Windows GX desktop browser, not regular Opera and not Opera GX on consoles.

## How old is it?

Opera Norway launched GX in 2019 as a gaming-branded Chromium Opera. It is much newer than 1995 Opera. Current GX still updates on a Chromium train. A Presto-era Opera guide is the wrong product.

Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

## Common problems

### Limiter set so low the page crawls

GX Control caps are real. Raise RAM or CPU in GX before you replace a GPU.

### Uninstalling regular Opera leaves GX

They are separate installs. Settings > Apps lists both.

## Getting unstuck

### Open GX Control before Task Manager panic

The GX corner sliders name the cap you set. Windows Task Manager only shows opera.exe.

### Check the path for Opera GX

Programs\Opera GX is this product. Programs\Opera is regular Opera. Both can show opera.exe.

### Install from opera.com/gx

A "GX turbo browser" listing is junk. Opera hosts the real installer.

## Alternatives

Regular Opera if you want the sidebar without GX cosmetics. Chrome and Firefox do not ship these RAM sliders.

## Related hardware

The limiter exists so a game can keep RAM and CPU. A weak machine still feels the Chromium tab underneath.
