# osu!

Application: ppy Pty Ltd

Also called osu, osu lates, ppy osu

ppy Pty Ltd, Games

A rhythm game with its own updater. The process is osu!.exe. It is not Steam-only.

## What you need to know

osu! has its own updater. Steam is optional, not required.

osu!.exe is ppy’s game and patcher. You can own it without Steam. Beatmaps live on osu.ppy.sh.

- **What is it?**: A rhythm game with its own updater

**Steam only?**: No. osu.ppy.sh is the historic path

  **Process?**: osu!.exe

Feex says

If osu!.exe will not update, I would take the installer from osu.ppy.sh. I would not start with Steam verify on a site install, and I would not treat this as a store client.

## What is osu!?

osu! is ppy’s rhythm game. osu!.exe updates and plays. The updater is first-party, not Valve’s.

## If you have never used it

If you play osu!, the official Windows build is the updater from osu.ppy.sh/home/download. That is the historic path. A Steam listing also exists later. It is not Steam-only. Beatmaps come from the osu! site. A random osu!.exe on a forum is the wrong file.

## What is it used for?

**Play beatmaps**

Hit circles and modes the wiki documents. Steam is optional. The game is not a launcher for other titles.

**Self-updater**

osu!.exe patches itself from ppy. That is why a Steam verify can be the wrong first repair on a non-Steam install.

**Supporter extras**

Optional supporter on the osu! account. Not a Steam DLC requirement.

## Who is it for?

- People who already have an osu! account
- Players who installed from osu.ppy.sh instead of Steam
- Anyone who should ignore “osu private server” exes

## Current status

osu! (2007) is a current rhythm game from ppy Pty Ltd. The vendor still points Windows users at https://osu.ppy.sh/home/download.

## How old is it?

ppy shipped osu! in 2007 as a free Windows rhythm game with its own updater. Steam came later as an extra storefront. A 2008 “download from osu.ppy.sh” ritual is still the vendor path.

## System requirements

Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

### Minimum

| Operating system | A current supported Windows 10 or Windows 11 release, per osu!’s download notes |
| ---------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| RAM | Light. Beatmap folders want disk |

## Resource profile

- **CPU demand**: Low to moderate during play

  **Disk demand**: Beatmap collections

## Installed processes

These executables belong to this product when it is installed.

| osu!.exe | Main Windows executable |
| -------- | ----------------------- |

## Startup components

osu! does not need to start with Windows. Opening osu!.exe starts the updater, then the game.

## File locations

| Typical install | C:\Users\\\<you>\AppData\Local\osu!\\ |
| --------------- | ------------------------------------- |

## File formats

osu! beatmaps, skins

## Common problems

### Wrong repair button

A site install does not belong to Steam verify. Use osu!’s updater or a fresh official download.

### Tablet or keyboard lag

osu! settings and USB polling are the first checks, not a new GPU.

## Getting unstuck

### Install from osu.ppy.sh/home/download

The official Windows build is there. A third-party osu!.exe is bait.

### Let the updater finish before you add beatmaps

The wiki covers a failed update. That is faster than a Windows reinstall.

### If you truly installed from Steam, use Steam’s verify

Only then. Mixed installs confuse both repair buttons.

## Alternatives

Other rhythm games if you do not want osu! maps. Steam if you prefer Valve’s install path. The site client if you do not want Steam.

A stable USB tablet or keyboard matters more than a famous GPU. The game is light.
