# Pidgin

Application: Pidgin community

Also called gaim, pidgin im

Pidgin community, Productivity

An old multi-protocol IM client that started as Gaim. On Windows the process is pidgin.exe.

## What you need to know

Pidgin is old multi-protocol IM. It is not Discord.

pidgin.exe is the Gaim-descended client. Discord is a different vendor. Plugins speak the networks. There is no Discord server inside Pidgin.

- **What is it?**: Multi-protocol IM

**Still current?**: Yes, see Current status

**Official download?**: Use the vendor link in this article

Feex says

If pidgin.exe is open, I would look at which protocol plugin is connected. This is not Discord. Closing Discord.exe does not drop a Pidgin XMPP session.

## What is Pidgin?

Pidgin is a libpurple desktop IM client. The Windows executable is pidgin.exe. Each protocol is a plugin, not a separate Discord-like cloud.

## If you have never used it

If a 2008 guide said install Pidgin, this is the old multi-protocol IM client that started as Gaim, not Discord. Download it from pidgin.im. The process is pidgin.exe. It speaks XMPP and other protocols through plugins. Discord.exe is a different product.

## What is it used for?

**Multi-protocol IM**

XMPP and other accounts in one buddy list. Discord servers are a different graph.

**Plugins**

libpurple plugins add networks. A missing protocol is a plugin issue, not a Windows feature.

**Local logs**

Pidgin can store chat logs on disk. That is not a Discord cloud history.

## Who is it for?

- People who still have XMPP or leftover protocol accounts
- Users following an old Gaim or Pidgin lab guide
- Anyone who thought it was a Discord client

## Current status

Pidgin (1998) is a current multi-protocol im from Pidgin community. The vendor still points Windows users at https://pidgin.im/.

## How old is it?

Gaim started in 1998 and was renamed Pidgin in 2007. It is much older than Discord (2015) and Slack (2013). Current Pidgin 2.x is still a plugin IM client, not a Discord server app.

## System requirements

Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

### Minimum

| Operating system | A current supported Windows 10 or Windows 11 release, per the vendor |
| ---------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| RAM | Enough for Windows plus this app. Heavy projects want more. |

## Resource profile

- **CPU demand**: Follows what you open inside the app

**RAM demand**: Follows documents, tabs, or libraries

## Installed processes

These executables belong to this product when it is installed.

| pidgin.exe | Main Windows executable |
| ---------- | ----------------------- |

## Startup components

Pidgin can start with Windows and sit in the tray. That is a Pidgin plugin or setting.

## File locations

| Typical install | C:\Program Files (x86)\Pidgin\\ |
| --------------- | ------------------------------- |

## File formats

Pidgin logs

## Common problems

### Modern messengers dropped old protocols

A 2010 MSN or AIM setup will not come back. That is protocol death, not a broken pidgin.exe.

### People install Discord to get a Pidgin buddy list

Wrong product. Pidgin will not join a discord.gg invite.

## Getting unstuck

### Install from pidgin.im

A Pidgin plus extra protocols pack from a mill is junk. Use official plugins.

### Read the Using Pidgin wiki

developer.pidgin.im/wiki/Using%20Pidgin covers accounts. Discord Support will not.

### Add the protocol plugin before you blame Windows

A missing XMPP login is often a missing plugin or server, not a NIC failure.

## Alternatives

Discord or Slack if the community already moved. Element if they use Matrix. A single native messenger if you only have one network left.

A very modest CPU is enough. Pidgin is light next to Electron chat apps.
