# Python

Application: Python Software Foundation

Also called cpython, python interpreter, python.org

Python Software Foundation, Productivity

CPython from the Python Software Foundation. On Windows the interpreter is python.exe. A python.org installer and a Microsoft Store package are different layouts.

## What you need to know

Python is a language runtime. python.exe is not node.exe.

python.exe runs .py files and the REPL. The Store package and the python.org installer land in different folders. node.exe is JavaScript. Ending Python does not stop Node.

- **What is it?**: The CPython interpreter

**Is python.exe a virus?**: Not by name. Check the path

**Store or python.org?**: Different layouts. Same language

Feex says

If python opens the Store instead of a version, I would check App execution aliases before I reinstall Windows. The interpreter is usually fine. The script next to it is the question.

## What is Python?

Python is the CPython language runtime. You install an interpreter. Windows does not ship it as an inbox service.

## If you have never used it

If a class said install Python, get the Windows installer from python.org/downloads/windows. The Microsoft Store also has a PSF package. Those two are not the same folder or PATH story. python.exe is the interpreter, not a virus by name. A python.exe in Downloads next to a crack is the story. It is not Node.js.

## What is it used for?

**Run scripts and the REPL**

python.exe executes .py files. py -0p lists installs the py launcher can see.

**Virtual environments**

A venv has its own python.exe. That is still CPython, not a second language.

**Pip packages**

python -m pip installs for that interpreter. Anaconda is a different distribution.

## Who is it for?

- Students whose syllabus says Python, not Anaconda
- People who saw python.exe and wondered if it was malware
- Anyone who typed python and got a Store page

## Current status

Actively developed. Current CPython supports Windows 10 and newer per PEP 11. This article is the Windows interpreter, not IronPython.

## How old is it?

Guido van Rossum released Python in 1991. It is older than Node.js (2009) and older than Anaconda Navigator. Current Windows work uses a 3.x build. A leftover 2.7 is history.

## Versions

## System requirements

Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

### Minimum

| Operating system | Current CPython supports Windows 10 and newer, per python.org docs (PEP 11) |
| ---------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| RAM | The interpreter is small. The script and packages decide memory |

## Resource profile

- **CPU demand**: Follows what you open inside the app

**RAM demand**: Follows documents, tabs, or libraries

## Installed processes

These executables belong to this product when it is installed.

| python.exe | CPython interpreter for that install |
| ----------- | ------------------------------------- |
| pythonw.exe | Same runtime without a console window |

## Startup components

Windows does not add python.exe as an inbox service. A Startup .py, a task, or an IDE can start it.

## File locations

| Typical install | C:\Users\\\<you>\AppData\Local\Programs\Python\Python3\*\\ |
| --------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------- |

## File formats

PY, PYC, WHEEL

## Common problems

### \`python\` opens the Microsoft Store

App execution aliases can steal the name. The Store package and the python.org installer are still different paths. This is not a broken Node install.

### Two pythons on PATH

A venv, a Store alias, and a python.org install can all be named python.exe. where.exe python and py -0p name which one launched.

## Getting unstuck

### where.exe python and py -0p

See Store versus python.org versus a venv. where.exe node is a different hunt.

### Read the command line for the .py

That is the workload. Do not delete node_modules to fix a Python hang.

### Turn off the Store alias if you want python.org on PATH

Settings > Apps > Advanced app settings > App execution aliases. That toggle is a Windows alias, not a virus.

## Alternatives

Anaconda is a large distribution with Navigator. Node.js is a different language runtime.

## Related hardware

Any current Windows 10 or 11 PC can run the interpreter. Heavy data work wants RAM. A GPU is only relevant if that library uses one.
