# RStudio

Application: Posit

Also called posit rstudio, rstudio desktop

Posit, Productivity

IDE for R. You still install R itself. The process is rstudio.exe. It is not R alone.

## What you need to know

RStudio is the IDE. You still install R. It is not R alone.

rstudio.exe needs a CRAN R install. MATLAB is a different product. The company name is now Posit.

- **What is it?**: IDE for R

**Still current?**: Yes, see Current status

**Official download?**: Use the vendor link in this article

Feex says

If rstudio.exe says it cannot find R, I install R from CRAN. I do not install MATLAB for that error.

## What is RStudio?

RStudio is an IDE that drives an R session (rsession.exe). Without R installed, the IDE has nothing to run. It does not include MATLAB toolboxes.

## If you have never used it

If a stats class said "install RStudio", you still install R from CRAN first, then RStudio Desktop from posit.co. rstudio.exe is the IDE. R-4.x\bin\R.exe is the language. MATLAB is a different paid environment.

## What is it used for?

**Write and run .R scripts**

The IDE. R.exe on CRAN is still required. This is not MATLAB.exe.

**Packages via install.packages**

CRAN and others. Those packages are R, not Posit-only, and not MATLAB toolboxes.

**Quarto and R Markdown**

Optional publishing in the IDE. Still R underneath.

## Who is it for?

- Stats students
- People who installed only the IDE and wondered why R was missing
- Analysts comparing R with MATLAB

## Current status

RStudio (2011) is a current ide for r from Posit. The vendor still points Windows users at https://posit.co/download/rstudio-desktop/.

## How old is it?

RStudio launched in 2011. The company is now Posit. Current RStudio Desktop still requires a separate R install. This is not R 1.0 from 2000, and it is not MATLAB.

## Versions

Major channels first. Exact build numbers are not all verified here.

RStudio Desktop

RStudio Workbench (server, different product)

## System requirements

Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

### Minimum

| Operating system | A current supported Windows 10 or Windows 11 release, per the vendor |
| ---------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| RAM | Enough for Windows plus this app. Heavy projects want more. |

## Resource profile

- **CPU demand**: Follows what you open inside the app

**RAM demand**: Follows documents, tabs, or libraries

## Installed processes

These executables belong to this product when it is installed.

| rstudio.exe | Main Windows executable |
| ------------ | -------------------------- |
| rsession.exe | R session the IDE talks to |

## Startup components

RStudio does not need to start with Windows.

## File locations

| Typical install | C:\Program Files\RStudio\\ |
| --------------- | -------------------------- |

## File formats

R, RMD, RDATA, RDS

## Common problems

### Installed RStudio without R

The IDE opens and then complains. CRAN Windows base is the missing piece. Not MATLAB.

### Two R versions, IDE picked the wrong one

Tools > Global Options > R General. That is RStudio, not a broken CRAN mirror.

## Getting unstuck

### Install R from cran.r-project.org, then RStudio from posit.co

Two downloads. Order matters if you want the IDE to detect R on first launch.

### If the session dies, look at rsession.exe

A crashing package is R, not Windows Explorer. Restart the session in the IDE.

### Do not replace R with MATLAB for a homework .R file

Wrong language. Octave is also not R.

## Alternatives

VS Code with an R extension. ESS in Emacs. MATLAB is a different language. Jupyter can host an R kernel.

## Related hardware

R itself is CPU and RAM for the data frame. The IDE is moderate. Big data wants RAM, not a special Feex sensor.
