# Rust

Application: Rust Foundation

Also called rustc, rustup, cargo

Rust Foundation, Productivity

The Rust language toolchain. rustup installs rustc.exe and cargo. rustc.exe is not a Windows component and it is not the Go compiler.

## What you need to know

rustup installs rustc.exe. That is not Go and not a Windows component.

Rust's compiler is rustc.exe, usually installed by rustup into a user folder. go.exe is Google's Go SDK. MSVC is the Microsoft C++ toolchain rustc may call. Windows does not inbox rustc.

- **What is it?**: Rust compiler via rustup

**Same as Go?**: No. Different language

**Windows inbox?**: No. rustup installs it

Feex says

If rustc is missing, I would rerun rustup-init from rust-lang.org. I would not uninstall Go to fix it. Those are different toolchains.

## What is Rust?

Rust is the language. rustup installs rustc and cargo. It is not Go, not MSVC, and not a Windows inbox compiler.

## If you have never used it

If a README said install Rust, run rustup from rust-lang.org/tools/install. rustup puts rustc.exe and cargo.exe under your user profile. rustc.exe is not a Windows component. go.exe is a different language SDK. Visual Studio Build Tools are often needed for the MSVC linker, not as a replacement compiler.

## What is it used for?

**Compile Rust crates**

rustc.exe and cargo.exe. go.exe will not build a Cargo.toml.

**Switch toolchains with rustup**

stable, beta, nightly. That version manager is Rust-specific.

**Link with MSVC or GNU**

On Windows, rustup often wants the Visual Studio C++ tools. cmake.exe is still not this compiler.

## Who is it for?

- People following a Rust book on Windows
- Users who saw rustc.exe and thought Windows shipped it
- Anyone who installed Go and wondered where cargo went

## Current status

Rust (2015) is a current language toolchain from Rust Foundation. The vendor still points Windows users at https://www.rust-lang.org/tools/install.

## How old is it?

Mozilla released Rust 1.0 in 2015. rustup became the standard installer. It is the same generation as Go 1.x on Windows, not a 1990s Microsoft language. Nightly and stable trains are current.

## Versions

## System requirements

Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

### Minimum

| Operating system | A current 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11 release, per rustup |
| ---------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------- |
| RAM | The compiler is modest. Large crates want several GB during build |

## Resource profile

- **CPU demand**: Follows what you open inside the app

**RAM demand**: Follows documents, tabs, or libraries

## Installed processes

These executables belong to this product when it is installed.

| rustc.exe | Rust compiler from rustup |
| --------- | --------------------------- |
| cargo.exe | Rust package and build tool |

## Startup components

rustc does not start with Windows. rustup updates when you ask.

## File locations

| Typical install | C:\Users\\\<you>\\.cargo\bin\\ |
| --------------- | ------------------------------ |

## File formats

RS, TOML

## Common problems

### linker \`link.exe\` not found

Install the Visual Studio C++ workload or Build Tools. That error is a Windows Rust host issue, not a missing go.exe.

### People copy rustc into System32

Let rustup manage ~/.cargo/bin. A random rustc.exe in Downloads is the case to ignore.

## Getting unstuck

### rustup show and where.exe rustc

Expect a path under .cargo or .rustup. Program Files\Go is the other language.

### Install from rust-lang.org/tools/install

rustup-init.exe is the official Windows entry. A Rust compiler zip on a forum is junk.

### Add the MSVC build tools if link.exe is missing

The Visual Studio Installer workload is the usual fix. CMake alone will not provide rustc.

## Alternatives

Go if the project is Go. MSVC if you are writing C++. rustup is still how you get this compiler.
