# Steam

Application: Valve Corporation

Also called steam client, valve steam

Valve Corporation, Games

Valve's game store and launcher. steam.exe is the client. Games you start from it are other executables.

## What you need to know

Steam is the launcher. The game is a different process.

steam.exe signs you in, updates libraries, and can inject an overlay. High disk use is often a download, not a dying GPU.

- **What is it?**: A store and game launcher

**Is the game this file?**: No

  **Disk busy?**: Often an update

Feex says

If the PC is loud while Steam looks idle, I would open the download list before I shop for a new cooler.

## What is Steam?

Steam is Valve's store, library, and overlay host. The Windows client is steam.exe.

## If you have never used it

If you bought a PC game "on Steam", Steam is the store and launcher, not the game. Install the client from store.steampowered.com. After sign-in you download games into a library folder. steam.exe staying open is normal. The game you launch is a different executable.

## What is it used for?

**Game library**

Install, update, and launch titles you already own on this account.

**Store and updates**

Browse, buy, and keep games patched. Disk use here is often a download.

**Overlay and friends**

Shift+Tab overlay, chat, and screenshots. Optional, and it can bother some games.

## Who is it for?

- People who buy and keep games in a Steam library
- Players who use Steam Workshop and overlay

## Current status

Actively developed. The client updates itself.

## How old is it?

Valve launched Steam in 2003 to patch Counter-Strike and Half-Life. It became the default PC store for a generation of players. The client is old. The storefront UI is not. A 2004 guide about "Steam as a Half-Life updater" is history, not the product on your disk.

## Versions

## System requirements

Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

### Minimum

| CPU | A 64-bit processor that current Windows supports |
| ---------------- | ------------------------------------------------ |
| RAM | The client is light. Games set the real bar |
| Storage | The client is small. Libraries can be huge |
| Operating system | A current supported Windows release, per Valve |

## Resource profile

- **CPU demand**: Low when idle. Overlay and updates raise it

  **Disk demand**: High during downloads

**Network demand**: Active during updates and store use

## Installed processes

These executables belong to this product when it is installed.

| steam.exe | Client |
| ------------------ | -------------------------------- |
| steamwebhelper.exe | Embedded web views in the client |

## Startup components

Steam can start with Windows from its own settings. Games you install are not this setting.

## File locations

| Typical install | C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\\ |
| --------------- | --------------------------------------- |
| Libraries | Extra folders you add in Steam settings |

## File formats

ACF, VDF

## Common problems

### Disk thrash while idle

Open Downloads. A game update or shader pre-cache can run without a big UI.

### Overlay crash

Disable the overlay as a test. The game executable is still the game.

## Getting unstuck

### Open the download list first

Library > Downloads. A quiet client can still be writing a 40 GB update.

### Verify the game, not Steam itself

Right-click the game > Properties > Installed Files > Verify. That is Valve's supported file check.

### Install only from store.steampowered.com

A "Steam setup" on a forum is a common bait file. The real installer is a small SteamSetup.exe from Valve.

## Alternatives

Epic, GOG, and Xbox apps cover overlapping stores. They do not replace a Steam library you already paid for.

## Related hardware

The client is light. The GPU and CPU bar is set by the game you launch, not by steam.exe.
