A paid, fast native editor from Sublime HQ with an unlimited evaluation. The process is sublime_text.exe. It is not Visual Studio Code.

## What you need to know

Sublime Text is sublime_text.exe. VS Code is Code.exe.

Sublime Text is a paid native editor with an unlimited evaluation. Visual Studio Code is Microsoft's free Electron editor. Uninstalling one does not remove the other.

  **Does the trial expire?**: No. It can nag on save

Feex says

If sublime_text.exe is light and Code.exe is heavy, that is the native versus Electron story. I would not treat the license nag as a virus. Sublime HQ is asking you to pay.

## What is Sublime Text?

Sublime Text is Sublime HQ's commercial editor. It is not VS Code, not Sublime Merge, and not Notepad++.

## If you have never used it

If someone said use Sublime, download it from sublimetext.com/download. It is a fast native editor, not an Electron app. A license is paid. The evaluation does not expire by calendar. Code.exe is VS Code. sublime_text.exe is this product.

## What is it used for?

**Fast file and project editing**

Goto Anything and multiple cursors. VS Code can feel similar and is still Code.exe.

**Package Control plugins**

Community packages inside Sublime. They are not the VS Code Marketplace.

**Unlimited evaluation**

The save dialog can nag. That is licensing, not malware. VS Code does not nag this way.

## Who is it for?

- People who want a native editor instead of Electron
- Users who will buy a license after the nag
- Anyone who mixed it up with VS Code because both edit code

## Current status

Sublime Text (2008) is a current text editor from Sublime HQ. The vendor still points Windows users at https://www.sublimetext.com/download.

## How old is it?

Jon Skinner shipped Sublime Text in 2008. It predates VS Code (2015) and most AI forks. Sublime Text 4 is the current Windows line. A ST2 license key from a forum is the wrong era.

Package Control is the Sublime plugin path. The VS Code Marketplace does not install here.

## Getting unstuck

### Install from sublimetext.com/download

A Sublime Text portable crack is junk. Sublime HQ hosts the real build.

### Confirm sublime_text.exe, not Code.exe

Program Files\Sublime Text is this article. Microsoft VS Code is the other editor.

### Reset packages if a plugin hangs the editor

Rename the Packages folder under AppData\Roaming\Sublime Text. That does not reset VS Code.

## Alternatives

VS Code if you want free extensions and Microsoft updates. Notepad++ if you want a free native Windows editor. Neovim if you want modal editing.
