# Windows services vs processes

Windows Update is a service named wuauserv. It often runs inside svchost.exe. Ending the host can take other services with it. Change the service, not the first process you do not recognize.

Feex says

If you want to stop updates, you are talking about a service. If you want to close a browser, you are talking about a process. Mixing those up is how people break a PC.

## A process

A process is a running executable. You see it on the Processes and Details tabs. You can end many app processes. You should not end critical Windows processes.

## A service

A service has a display name and a system name. Windows can start it automatically, on a trigger, or by hand. services.msc and the Services tab list those contracts. WinDefend and WSearch are services. MsMpEng.exe and SearchHost.exe are processes you notice.

## Why svchost.exe shows up

Many services do not have their own exe. Windows loads them into Service Host. Several svchost.exe rows are normal. The useful next click is the service inside the instance.

## What to change

To close Chrome, quit chrome.exe. To pause updates, use Windows Update settings or a short service stop for troubleshooting. Do not disable a service because the host process looked busy.

- Identify the name
- Open the matching Feex Wiki article
- Prefer Settings or a documented troubleshooter
- Do not edit the Registry first
