# When high CPU is normal

Copying files, installing updates, scanning with Defender, and opening a browser can pin a core for a while. A name that stays at the top while the PC is idle needs its own article. Do not end csrss.exe or lsass.exe to chase a percentage.

Feex says

I ask three things: what is the name, how long has it been busy, and is the PC actually doing a job. A percentage without a name is just a scare.

## When a busy CPU is expected

A short spike while you open an app, copy a large folder, install an update, or scan with Windows Security is often the machine doing the job you asked for. Video, browsers with many tabs, and photo editors can also sit high while they work. That is load, not proof of malware.

- Opening or installing software
- Windows Update or Store downloads
- A Defender or other antivirus scan
- Export, encode, or a heavy browser session

## What to look at first

Read the process name, then how long it stays high. A 20-second spike on explorer.exe after you open a folder of photos is different from MsMpEng.exe at the top for an hour while you are idle. Open the Feex Wiki article for that name before you change services.

## Windows names that often look scary

Antimalware Service Executable (MsMpEng.exe) scans files. Service Host (svchost.exe) can look busy when a service inside it is working, including Windows Update. Desktop Window Manager (dwm.exe) draws the desktop. High use on those names is a reason to read the article, not a reason to disable the service on the first try.

## When it is not just a spike

If the fans stay loud, the PC feels stuck, and the same name sits at the top after you close your apps, treat it as a stuck job. Check the path and publisher. Prefer Settings, a documented troubleshooter, or the related service page. Do not delete System32 files or end lsass.exe and csrss.exe.
