Epic Games, Games

Game engine you install through the Epic Games Launcher. UE5 is current. The editor is UnrealEditor.exe. It is not the Epic launcher as the engine.

## What you need to know

**Still current?**: Yes, see Current status

Feex says

If EpicGamesLauncher.exe is the only process, I would install an engine version from the Unreal Library. The launcher is not UnrealEditor.exe.

## What is Unreal Engine?

Unreal Engine is the editor and runtime. You almost always install it through the Epic Games Launcher. The launcher is not the engine.

## If you have never used it

If you want Unreal Engine, install the Epic Games Launcher, then install an engine version from the Unreal Library. The launcher is the storefront. UnrealEditor.exe is the engine. Unity Hub is a different engine's installer.

## What is it used for?

**Edit levels and Blueprints**

UnrealEditor.exe. Fortnite in the same launcher is a game, not this editor.

**Install engine versions via Epic**

Library > Unreal Engine. EpicGamesLauncher.exe is the downloader, not the editor.

**C++ game modules**

Visual Studio plus an engine install. Unity projects will not open here.

## Who is it for?

- People making UE5 games or cinematics
- Anyone who opened the Epic launcher and thought that was the engine
- Teams moving off UE4

## Current status

Unreal Engine (1998) is a current game engine from Epic Games. The vendor still points Windows users at https://www.unrealengine.com/download.

## How old is it?

Unreal dates to 1998. Unreal Engine 5 is the current line. A UDK 3 tutorial is a different era. The Epic Games Launcher is still how Windows users fetch UE.

## Versions

Major channels first. Exact build numbers are not all verified here.

Unreal Engine 5

Unreal Engine 4 (legacy projects)

## System requirements

Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

### Minimum

| Operating system | A current supported Windows 10 or Windows 11 release, per the vendor |
| ---------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| RAM | Editor work wants 16 GB class machines or more, per typical Epic guidance. The launcher is light |

## Resource profile

- **CPU demand**: Follows what you open inside the app

**RAM demand**: Follows documents, tabs, or libraries

| EpicGamesLauncher.exe | How most people install and update UE |

## Startup components

Epic Games Launcher can start with Windows. UnrealEditor.exe starts when you open a project.

## File locations

| Typical install | C:\Program Files\Epic Games\UE_5\*\Engine\Binaries\Win64\\ |
| --------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------- |

## File formats

UASSET, UMAP, UPROJECT

## Common problems

### Installed Epic and no editor appeared

Library > Unreal Engine > Install. The launcher can exist with zero engine versions.

### Opened a Unity project in Unreal

Different engine. There is no silent convert.

## Getting unstuck

### Install from unrealengine.com/download, which sends you through Epic

That is the supported Windows path. Skip "UE5 full cracked" packs.

### Confirm UnrealEditor.exe launched, not only the launcher

A Fortnite tile in Epic is not the engine.

### Use the engine version the project was built with

UE5.3 projects do not always open cleanly in a newer minor. The launcher keeps versions side by side.

## Alternatives

Unity Hub plus a Unity editor. Godot is a smaller free engine. The Epic launcher also launches games. Those games are not this article.

UE5 editors want a discrete GPU and plenty of RAM. Epic documents current hardware guidance on the Unreal site. The launcher itself is light.
