# Webex

Application: Cisco Systems

Also called cisco webex, webex meetings

Cisco Systems, Productivity

Cisco's meeting client used by many workplaces. On Windows the process is webex.exe.

## What you need to know

Webex is Cisco's meeting client. It is not Zoom.

webex.exe is the Windows Webex app. Zoom is a different vendor. Teams is a third meeting product. The tray can stay after hang-up.

Feex says

If webex.exe is the heavy process during a meeting, I would treat it as Cisco Webex, not Zoom. Quitting Zoom.exe does nothing to this call.

## What is Webex?

Webex is Cisco's meeting and calling desktop client. The Windows executable is webex.exe. Helpers can appear during a call.

## If you have never used it

If a calendar invite says Join Webex, this is Cisco Webex, not Zoom. You can often join in a browser. The Windows app is for people who join often. Download it from webex.com/downloads.html. The process is webex.exe. Zoom.exe is a different vendor.

## What is it used for?

**Scheduled meetings**

The call window for a Webex site. This is why webex.exe appears during work hours.

**Webex calling or messaging some tenants enable**

Optional Cisco features. Zoom does not host this tenant.

**Recordings the host started**

Cloud or local recording is a Webex host feature, not a Windows Game Bar clip.

## Who is it for?

- People whose workplace standardizes on Webex links
- Users with a Webex site URL from IT
- Anyone comparing webex.exe with Zoom.exe

## Current status

Webex (1995) is a current meetings from Cisco Systems. The vendor still points Windows users at https://www.webex.com/downloads.html.

## How old is it?

WebEx started in 1995. Cisco bought it in 2007. The current Webex app is a modern client, not the 2004 Java meeting launcher. It is older as a brand than Zoom (2013).

## Versions

## System requirements

Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

### Minimum

| Operating system | A current supported Windows 10 or Windows 11 release, per the vendor |
| ---------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| RAM | Enough for Windows plus this app. Heavy projects want more. |

## Resource profile

- **CPU demand**: Follows what you open inside the app

**RAM demand**: Follows documents, tabs, or libraries

## Installed processes

These executables belong to this product when it is installed.

| webex.exe | Main Windows executable |
| --------- | ----------------------- |

## Startup components

Webex can start with Windows from its own setting so the tray is ready for the next invite.

## File locations

| Typical install | C:\Users\\\<you>\AppData\Local\Programs\Cisco Spark\\ |
| --------------- | ----------------------------------------------------- |

## File formats

MP4 recordings

## Common problems

### Leftover camera after hang-up

Quit from the Webex tray. A leftover preview keeps helpers alive.

### People disable Zoom to fix Webex audio

Wrong client. Webex still needs the Windows audio stack.

## Getting unstuck

### Install from webex.com/downloads.html

A Webex meeting exe from a search ad is junk. Your IT site URL is the other official path.

### Join from the invite in a browser if the app is missing

help.webex.com documents browser join. A random helper exe is the wrong file.

### Test audio in Webex settings

Webex names the mic it sees. Windows Audio still belongs to audiodg.exe.

## Alternatives

Zoom or Teams if that is the invite. Meet if the calendar says Google Meet. Do not install all three "just in case" unless you join all three.
