# Webroot

Application: OpenText

Also called webroot secureanywhere, wrsa, webroot antivirus

OpenText, Security

A small-footprint cloud antivirus often bundled by ISPs. The process is WRSA.exe. It is not Windows Security.

## What you need to know

WRSA.exe is Webroot's small cloud agent. It should take Defender's slot.

Webroot is an ISP-familiar cloud AV now under OpenText. The agent is WRSA.exe. A tiny folder is expected. Two live engines with Windows Security is the conflict.

- **What is it?**: Small cloud AV often bundled by ISPs

**Why is the folder tiny?**: Definitions are in the cloud

**Plus Defender?**: No. One live engine

Feex says

If WRSA.exe is small and someone said the AV is missing, I would check Windows Security for Webroot. Cloud definitions are the design. I would not leave it live next to Defender.

## What is Webroot?

Webroot is a small-footprint cloud antivirus. WRSA.exe is the Windows agent. ISP bundles are common. OpenText is the current owner.

## If you have never used it

If an ISP mailed a Webroot key, this is that small cloud AV, not Defender. Download it from webroot.com. WRSA.exe is the agent. OpenText owns Webroot. The agent should take the antivirus slot. WRSA.exe plus live MsMpEng.exe is the two-engine fight. The tiny disk footprint is the pitch, not a missing install.

## What is it used for?

**Resident cloud AV**

The agent is small on disk because definitions live in the cloud. It should still own realtime so Defender goes passive.

**ISP or retail key**

A cable-company letter is a common source. That key is Webroot, not Norton just because both arrived in the mail.

**Identity extras on some SKUs**

Thicker Webroot plans add extras. WRSA.exe is still the agent.

## Who is it for?

- People who activated an ISP antivirus key
- Users surprised that Program Files\Webroot is tiny
- Anyone with WRSA.exe next to live Defender

## Current status

Actively sold under OpenText. This article is consumer Webroot on Windows.

## How old is it?

Webroot dates to the 1990s and became a cloud-signature AV. Carbonite and then OpenText owned it. Current consumer branding is SecureAnywhere. A 2004 Webroot Spy Sweeper box is a different era.

## System requirements

Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

### Minimum

| Operating system | Windows 10 or Windows 11, per current Webroot support |
| ---------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| RAM | Webroot lists a low RAM floor because the agent is small. 2 GB class appears on older pages |

## Resource profile

- **CPU demand**: Look-ups and scans

  **Disk demand**: Tiny local footprint

  **Network demand**: Cloud signatures

## Installed processes

These executables belong to this product when it is installed.

| WRSA.exe | Webroot SecureAnywhere agent |
| -------- | ---------------------------- |

## Startup components

WRSA.exe starts with Windows while Webroot owns protection.

## File locations

| Typical install | C:\Program Files\Webroot\\ |
| --------------- | -------------------------- |

## Common problems

### WRSA.exe plus live Defender

Webroot should own realtime. If MsMpEng.exe still scans, both engines are live.

### Offline PC looks unprotected

Cloud look-ups need a network. That is the product model, not proof the files were deleted.

## Getting unstuck

### Install from webroot.com with the ISP key

A "Webroot 2026 full" host is not OpenText.

### Check Windows Security for Webroot

The owner should change after a successful register.

### Do not add Norton just because a second mailer arrived

Two resident suites is the fight. Pick Webroot or Defender or the other paid product, not all three.

## Alternatives

Windows Security if you drop the ISP suite. Norton or McAfee if that is the other mailer, not a stack.
