# WebStorm

Application: JetBrains

Also called web storm, jetbrains webstorm

JetBrains, Productivity

JetBrains' paid JavaScript and TypeScript IDE. The 64-bit Windows process is webstorm64.exe. It is not Visual Studio Code.

## What you need to know

WebStorm is webstorm64.exe. VS Code is Code.exe.

WebStorm is JetBrains' paid JavaScript IDE. Visual Studio Code is Microsoft's free editor. node.exe is the runtime both can launch. IntelliJ Ultimate is a different JetBrains SKU.

- **What is it?**: Paid JetBrains JavaScript IDE

**Same as VS Code?**: No. Different vendor and exe

**Need Node too?**: Yes, for most JS apps

Feex says

If webstorm64.exe is busy, I would check the project index and language services inside WebStorm. I would not close Code.exe to quit this IDE. VS Code is a different editor.

## What is WebStorm?

WebStorm is JetBrains' dedicated JavaScript and TypeScript IDE. It is not VS Code, not Visual Studio, and not node.exe.

## If you have never used it

If you want a JetBrains IDE for JavaScript, that is WebStorm. Download it from jetbrains.com/webstorm/download. webstorm64.exe is this paid IDE. Code.exe is VS Code. IntelliJ Ultimate can cover some of the same web stack. It is still a different SKU and exe.

## What is it used for?

**JavaScript and TypeScript projects**

npm, Vite, and the JetBrains indexer. VS Code can edit the same files with extensions.

**Built-in web inspections**

Paid IDE features. The VS Code Marketplace is a different catalog.

**Debug Node and browsers JetBrains supports**

Run configurations inside WebStorm. node.exe is still the runtime.

## Who is it for?

- Front-end developers who want a JetBrains IDE
- People who already pay for All Products
- Anyone who opened VS Code and thought it was WebStorm

## Current status

WebStorm (2010) is a current javascript ide from JetBrains. The vendor still points Windows users at https://www.jetbrains.com/webstorm/download/.

## How old is it?

JetBrains shipped WebStorm in 2010. It is younger than IntelliJ and older than VS Code (2015). Current Windows builds ship through Toolbox or the standalone installer.

## Versions

Major channels first. Exact build numbers are not all verified here.

## System requirements

Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

### Minimum

| Operating system | A current 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11 release, per JetBrains |
| ---------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| RAM | JetBrains lists 2 GB minimum and 8 GB recommended for current WebStorm builds |

## Resource profile

- **CPU demand**: Follows what you open inside the app

**RAM demand**: Follows documents, tabs, or libraries

## Installed processes

These executables belong to this product when it is installed.

| webstorm64.exe | WebStorm 64-bit IDE |
| -------------- | ------------------- |

## Startup components

WebStorm can reopen the last project. That is not node.exe as a service.

## File locations

| Typical install | C:\Program Files\JetBrains\WebStorm \*\\ |
| --------------- | ---------------------------------------- |

## File formats

JS, TS, JSON

## Common problems

### License required after evaluation

Expected. A crack is junk. VS Code will not show this JetBrains dialog.

### People install VS Code for a class that wanted WebStorm

The class likely meant webstorm64.exe. Code.exe plus extensions is not the same indexer.

## Getting unstuck

### Confirm webstorm64.exe under JetBrains\WebStorm

Microsoft VS Code is Code.exe. idea64.exe is IntelliJ.

### Install from jetbrains.com/webstorm/download or Toolbox

JetBrains hosts the real builds.

### Point WebStorm at the Node interpreter you actually use

nvm-windows copies are easy to miss. That setting is not a VS Code launch.json.

## Alternatives

VS Code if you want a free editor. IntelliJ Ultimate if you already have that license. Neovim if you want a terminal.
