# Windows Calculator

Application: Microsoft Corporation

Also called calculator, calc, windows calc

Microsoft Corporation, System

The Store calculator. The window is CalculatorApp.exe. calc.exe still exists as a stub on current Windows. It is not calc.exe alone.

## What you need to know

The calculator window is CalculatorApp.exe. calc.exe is the stub.

Windows Calculator is a Store app. calc.exe still exists as a launch helper. Get it back from the Store listing if a script removed it. It is not a lone System32 calculator anymore.

- **What is it?**: The Windows Store calculator

**Is calc.exe the whole app?**: No. It is a stub. CalculatorApp.exe is the window

**Can I remove it?**: Yes from Apps. Reinstall from the Store

Feex says

If the window is Calculator and the image is CalculatorApp, I treat that as the real app. I do not delete calc.exe to close it. I reinstall the Store package if a debloat script removed it.

## What is Windows Calculator?

CalculatorApp.exe is Microsoft Windows Calculator in WindowsApps. calc.exe is the helper that starts it on current Windows. Ending calc.exe may not close the window. Ending CalculatorApp.exe does.

## If you have never used it

If you open Calculator from Start, the window is the Store app CalculatorApp.exe. calc.exe still lives in System32 as a stub that starts it. Graphing and converters live in this app. It is not the old 16-bit calc from Windows 3.1, and it is not a third-party calc.exe on the Desktop.

## What is it used for?

**Standard, scientific, and graphing modes**

Those modes are this Store app. A random calc.exe in Downloads is not Microsoft.

**Unit and currency converters**

Converter pages are Calculator features. Paint and Photos do not do this math.

**Launch via calc.exe or Start**

Win+R calc still works because of the stub. The UI you see is CalculatorApp.exe.

## Who is it for?

- Anyone who opened Calculator from Start
- People who ended calc.exe and the window stayed
- Users who lost Calculator after a debloat script

## Current status

Windows Calculator (1985) is a current calculator from Microsoft Corporation. The vendor still points Windows users at https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9wzdncrfhvn5.

## How old is it?

Calculator shipped with Windows in 1985. The current app is a Store rewrite. calc.exe remains as a launch name. A Windows 95 calc screenshot is nostalgia, not CalculatorApp.exe.

## Versions

Major channels first. Exact build numbers are not all verified here.

## System requirements

Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

### Minimum

| Operating system | Ships with supported Windows 10 and Windows 11 |
| ---------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------- |
| RAM | Enough for Windows plus this app. Heavy projects want more. |

## Resource profile

- **CPU demand**: Low except graphing

**RAM demand**: Moderate for a packaged app

## Installed processes

These executables belong to this product when it is installed.

| CalculatorApp.exe | Store Calculator window |
| ----------------- | --------------------------------------- |
| calc.exe | System32 shim that starts the Store app |

## Startup components

Calculator starts when you open it. A Startup shortcut is something you added.

## File locations

| Typical install | C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\Microsoft.WindowsCalculator\_\*\\ |
| --------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------- |

## File formats

It calculates. History can export on some builds

## Common problems

### People end calc.exe and the window stays

The window is CalculatorApp.exe. End that row, or close the window.

### Calculator missing after a debloat script

Reinstall from the Store. Do not drop a random calc.exe on the desktop.

## Getting unstuck

### Start > Calculator. If that opens, CalculatorApp.exe is the process

calc.exe may flash and vanish. That is the stub, not a second calculator.

### Repair or reset Calculator in Settings > Apps

That is the supported fix, not a System32 replace.

### Do not download calc.exe from a filename site

The Store package is Microsoft.WindowsCalculator. Paint is a different app if you meant to draw.

## Alternatives

A hardware calculator. PowerToys has no replacement for this. Third-party calc apps are optional.
