# Windows Security

Application: Microsoft Corporation

Also called windows defender, microsoft defender, security center

Microsoft Corporation, Security

The Windows app that shows Defender, firewall, and related health. The scan engine is MsMpEng.exe.

## What you need to know

Windows Security is the front door. Defender is the engine.

The app shows virus, account, and firewall status. Antimalware Service Executable is the scan. Disabling the engine without another antivirus is a security gap.

- **What is it?**: The in-box security app

**Do I need it?**: Yes, unless another AV is active

**High CPU?**: Often a scan in MsMpEng.exe

Feex says

If someone tells you to turn off Windows Security to speed up a game, I would ask what is scanning instead.

## What is Windows Security?

Windows Security is the Settings-style app for Microsoft Defender Antivirus, firewall, and related health. It is not the engine process itself.

## If you have never used it

If you never installed an antivirus, this is the one Windows already has. Open Windows Security from Start. The blue shield in the tray is the same product family. The heavy scan process is MsMpEng.exe, not the Settings-style window. You do not download "Windows Defender" from a filename site.

## What is it used for?

**Virus and threat protection**

Scan, protection history, and exclusions. This is Defender Antivirus.

**Firewall and network**

The Windows Firewall switch people look for after a game or a printer fails.

**Account and device health**

A status page. It is not a second antivirus engine.

## Who is it for?

- Anyone on current Windows who did not install another antivirus
- People who see Antimalware Service Executable in Task Manager

## Current status

Actively developed as part of Windows. The old "Windows Defender" name still appears in search.

## How old is it?

Microsoft shipped Windows Defender as antispyware in 2006, then grew it into the in-box antivirus. The Windows Security app is the current front door on Windows 10 and Windows 11. MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials) was the Windows 7-era download. It is not what current Windows 11 opens.

## Versions

Major channels first. Exact build numbers are not all verified here.

Windows 11

## System requirements

Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

### Minimum

| Operating system | Current Windows 10 or Windows 11 |
| ---------------- | ----------------------------------------------------- |
| Other antivirus | If another product is active, Defender may go passive |

## Resource profile

- **CPU demand**: The app is light. The engine can spike during a scan

**Disk demand**: Full scans are disk-heavy

## Installed processes

These executables belong to this product when it is installed.

| MsMpEng.exe | Antimalware engine |
| ------------------------- | --------------------- |
| SecurityHealthSystray.exe | Tray icon on many PCs |

## Startup components

Defender starts with Windows when it is the active antivirus. That is expected.

## File locations

| App | Windows Security in Start |
| ------ | -------------------------------------------------- |
| Engine | Windows Defender platform folder under ProgramData |

## Common problems

### High CPU named Antimalware Service Executable

See the MsMpEng.exe article. A scan or a second antivirus fight is the usual story.

### Service will not start

Another antivirus may own the slot. Check the Virus and threat protection page.

## Getting unstuck

### Open Windows Security, not a third-party cleaner

Start > Windows Security. Virus and threat protection names the active engine.

### Check for a second antivirus

If another suite is installed, Defender may sit in passive mode. That is expected, not a broken Windows.

### Follow the MsMpEng.exe article for CPU spikes

The app window is light. The scan engine is the process that heats a laptop.

## Alternatives

Third-party antivirus suites can replace live protection. Two live engines at once is a common source of pain.
