A paid RAR and ZIP archiver from win.rar GmbH. The window is WinRAR.exe. It is not 7-Zip and it is not a free 7z-only extractor.

## What you need to know

WinRAR packs RAR. 7-Zip is a different free product.

Eugene Roshal's WinRAR creates RAR archives and opens many other containers. The official storefront is win-rar.com. A "WinRAR free 2026" ad page is not the vendor. 7-Zip from 7-zip.org is not this install.

Feex says

If you only need to unzip a zip, I would not pay for WinRAR just because the nag is loud. The trial never locks the extract button. I still would not download it from a toolbar site.

## What is WinRAR?

WinRAR is the Windows GUI for the RAR format. WinRAR.exe is the manager. It is not 7zFM.exe from 7-zip.org.

## If you have never used it

If a .rar will not open in Explorer, WinRAR is the paid archiver people mean. Download it from win-rar.com. The yellow nag asking you to buy is the shareware trial. It does not lock extracts. This is not 7-Zip, not NanaZip, and not a Windows update.

## What is it used for?

**Create RAR archives**

RAR is WinRAR's native format. 7-Zip's native format is 7z. Same job, different container.

**Extract zip, rar, and others**

Explorer still cannot create RAR. WinRAR opens the ones people email from older PCs.

**Self-extracting and recovery records**

SFX and recovery-record options live here. Those are WinRAR features, not a 7-Zip dialog.

- People who were sent a .rar and Explorer will not open it
- Shops that standardized on RAR years ago
- Anyone staring at a buy nag and wondering if the trial is broken

## Current status

Actively sold by win.rar GmbH. Current Windows builds are 64-bit. This article is the desktop shareware app, not Android RAR.

## How old is it?

WinRAR shipped for Windows in 1995. RAR for DOS is older. It is not a 2020s startup and it is not 7-Zip from 1999. Current WinRAR documents Windows 7 x64 or later.

## Common problems

### The buy window never goes away

That is the shareware nag. Extracts still work. Paying removes the reminder. It is not a failed license key.

### Fake "WinRAR Pro" download sites

The vendor domains are win-rar.com and rarlab.com. An ad-network installer is not win.rar GmbH.

## Getting unstuck

### Download only from win-rar.com

If the setup came from a "free download" portal, uninstall it and get the small official exe. 7-zip.org is a different product if you wanted free 7z instead.

### Associate RAR in WinRAR options if double-click opens the wrong app

Options > Settings > Integration. That is a file association, not a Windows reinstall.

### Ignore the nag if you only extract

Closing the purchase dialog does not cancel the extract. Buying is optional. Switching to 7-Zip is the free alternative, not a crack.

## Alternatives

7-Zip and PeaZip cover zip and 7z for free. They do not create official RAR the way WinRAR does.
