# WireGuard

Application: Jason A. Donenfeld

Also called wire guard, wireguard windows

Jason A. Donenfeld, Security

A VPN protocol plus a simple Windows client. The window is wireguard.exe. You still need a server. It is not OpenVPN.

## What you need to know

wireguard.exe needs a server. It is not OpenVPN and not NordVPN.

The official WireGuard client imports a config. You still need a peer. OpenVPN uses .ovpn files. Tailscale wraps WireGuard into a tailnet. Consumer VPNs hide the server behind a subscribe button.

- **What is it?**: Protocol plus a simple client. You need a server

**Same as OpenVPN?**: No. Different protocol and file

**Country list?**: No. That is a consumer VPN

Feex says

If wireguard.exe is empty, I would ask where the server is. This is not NordVPN. OpenVPN GUI wants an .ovpn, not a WireGuard conf. Tailscale is the mesh product if you did not want to run a server.

## What is WireGuard?

WireGuard is a protocol and a simple official Windows GUI. wireguard.exe does not include a vendor server. You add a config.

## If you have never used it

If someone handed you a .conf file, this is the official WireGuard Windows client, not OpenVPN. Download it from wireguard.com/install. wireguard.exe imports the config. You still need a server somewhere. NordLynx and Lightway are vendor protocols built on or beside this idea. Tailscale uses WireGuard and adds a mesh. This app is not a streaming-region subscription.

## What is it used for?

**Import a .conf**

IT or your VPS gives you a config. The app does not sell a country list.

**Own-server tunnel**

You run a WireGuard peer. OpenVPN would use an .ovpn instead.

**Not Tailscale by itself**

Tailscale speaks WireGuard and adds coordination. This exe will not create a tailnet.

## Who is it for?

- People who were given a WireGuard config
- Admins who run their own peers
- Anyone who should not expect Netflix-region servers in this window

## Current status

Actively maintained. This article is the official Windows client, not NordLynx inside NordVPN.

## How old is it?

Jason A. Donenfeld shipped WireGuard in the late 2010s. The Windows client followed. It is younger than OpenVPN (2001). Current installs are the official wireguard.exe, not a 2018 test driver only.

## Versions

## System requirements

Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

### Minimum

| Operating system | Windows 10 or Windows 11, per wireguard.com install notes |
| ---------------- | --------------------------------------------------------- |
| RAM | Light client |

## Resource profile

- **CPU demand**: Low encryption cost while the tunnel is up

**Network demand**: Only if you route traffic through the peer

## Installed processes

These executables belong to this product when it is installed.

| wireguard.exe | Official Windows manager. Needs a config and a server |
| ------------- | ----------------------------------------------------- |
| wireguard.exe | Tunnel service instances use the same family |

## Startup components

A tunnel can start at logon if you set it in wireguard.exe. That is not a consumer VPN subscription.

## File locations

| Typical install | C:\Program Files\WireGuard\\ |
| --------------- | ---------------------------- |

## File formats

CONF, WG tunnel

## Common problems

### No config, no tunnel

The app will not invent a country list. You need a .conf from a server you control or a vendor that exported one.

### People install this to get NordLynx

NordLynx lives inside NordVPN.exe. This client will not log into Nord.

## Getting unstuck

### Install from wireguard.com/install

openvpn.net is the other protocol. tailscale.com is the mesh wrapper.

### Import the .conf, then activate the tunnel

A leftover OpenVPN GUI profile is a different tunnel.

### Check the server is up

A handshake failure is often the peer, not a Windows reinstall.

## Alternatives

OpenVPN if you were handed an .ovpn. Tailscale if you want a mesh without running your own peer. NordVPN if you wanted a paid country list.
