# WPS Office

Kingsoft's office suite, common on Windows PCs especially outside the US. The process is wpsoffice.exe. It is not Microsoft 365.

## What you need to know

WPS is Kingsoft's suite. Microsoft 365 is Microsoft's suite.

wpsoffice.exe is not WINWORD.EXE. A free WPS install is not a Microsoft 365 license. File fidelity can be good and still differ from desktop Word.

If wpsoffice.exe is the window, that is Kingsoft, not Microsoft 365. I would not run a Click-to-Run repair to fix WPS. I also would not treat it as LibreOffice.

## What is WPS Office?

WPS Office is Kingsoft's Writer, Spreadsheets, and Presentation suite. wpsoffice.exe is the Windows shell. Microsoft 365 is Microsoft's suite. They do not share Click-to-Run Office16.

## If you have never used it

If a PC came with Writer, Spreadsheets, and Presentation tiles from Kingsoft, this is WPS Office, not Microsoft 365. Download it from wps.com. wpsoffice.exe is the suite. WINWORD.EXE is Microsoft Word. A free WPS install may show ads. Microsoft 365 is a Microsoft subscription and a different installer.

## What is it used for?

**Writer, sheets, and slides**

Kingsoft modules that open many Microsoft formats. The process is still wpsoffice.exe, not WINWORD.EXE.

**PDF tools WPS bundles**

Some builds include PDF features. Adobe Acrobat is a different vendor. Microsoft 365 is not this PDF toolbox.

**Free versus Premium**

Ads and cloud upsells are Kingsoft's business model. A Microsoft 365 receipt will not remove them.

- PCs that shipped with WPS outside the US
- People who want a free suite and accept Kingsoft's terms
- Anyone who should not repair Microsoft 365 to fix wpsoffice.exe

## Current status

Actively developed. Free and paid SKUs exist. This article is the Windows suite, not WPS on Android alone.

## How old is it?

Kingsoft's WPS line dates to 1988 in China, older than Microsoft 365's 2011 Office 365 brand. International Windows PCs often get WPS as a free suite. It is not a Microsoft product and not LibreOffice.

### Ads and extra offers in the free build

That is Kingsoft's free SKU. Microsoft 365 Apps will not remove those ads.

### Default app stole .docx

Windows file associations. Set Word or WPS on purpose. Repairing Office does not always win the association back.

## Getting unstuck

### Open file location on wpsoffice.exe

Kingsoft or WPS Office folders are this product. Microsoft Office\root\Office16 is Microsoft 365.

### Install from wps.com, not a "free Office" bundle PC maker page you do not trust

Microsoft 365 installs from office.com. Those are different vendors.

### If a work template requires desktop Word, use Word

WPS is not a hidden Microsoft SKU. That is the sibling-swap test with Microsoft 365.

## Alternatives

Microsoft 365, LibreOffice, and ONLYOFFICE overlap. Microsoft 365 is the sibling this article is not.
