# Xbox Game Bar

## What you need to know

Game Bar is Win+G. The Xbox app is Game Pass.

GameBar.exe is the overlay. XboxPcApp.exe is the store and friends list. Presence writer is not the UI.

  **Same as the Xbox app?**: No. Game Pass is XboxPcApp.exe

  **How do I turn it off?**: Settings > Gaming > Game Bar

If Win+G is on screen, that is GameBar.exe. I do not end the game to hide it, and I do not open the Xbox app to turn the overlay off.

## What is Xbox Game Bar?

Xbox Game Bar is the Win+G overlay. GameBar.exe draws widgets and capture. GameBarPresenceWriter.exe only publishes that a title is active.

## If you have never used it

If you pressed Win+G and a widget bar appeared, this is Xbox Game Bar. It is an overlay for capture, clocks, and widgets. It is not the Xbox PC app. Game Pass lives in XboxPcApp.exe. Settings > Gaming > Game Bar is the off switch. You do not download GameBar.exe from a forum.

## What is it used for?

**Win+G capture**

Record a clip or screenshot. The Xbox PC app does not replace this overlay. Discord has its own overlay.

**Widgets**

Clock, resources, and optional widgets. That is not the Game Pass library.

**Presence for widgets**

Presence writer tells widgets you are in a game. Ending GameBar.exe hides the UI. The game stays running.

- Anyone who mixed this up with the Xbox PC app

## Current status

Xbox Game Bar (2019) is a current capture overlay from Microsoft Corporation. The vendor still points Windows users at https://support.xbox.com/help/games-apps/game-bar.

## How old is it?

Microsoft shipped Game Bar with the late Windows 10 gaming push around 2019. The Xbox PC app is a different Store package. A 2013 “Xbox 360 overlay” memory is the wrong decade.

## Common problems

### Overlay on a browser or a work app

Game Bar can attach to more than games. Turn it off in Settings > Gaming > Game Bar.

### People think the Xbox app is the overlay

Wrong package. Repairing GamingApp will not hide Win+G.

## Getting unstuck

### Settings > Gaming > Game Bar

The supported off switch. Win+G should stop opening GameBar.exe.

### Confirm WindowsApps\Microsoft.XboxGamingOverlay

Open file location. A GameBar.exe in a trainer zip is not the overlay.

### Do not delete GameBarPresenceWriter.exe to hide the UI

Writer is presence. The overlay package is Game Bar. Microsoft documents the setting, not a System32 delete.

## Alternatives

NVIDIA overlay, Discord overlay, or a different capture tool. The Xbox PC app if you meant Game Pass.
