NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070

Desktop GPUNVIDIA

Also called rtx 4070, rtx4070, 4070, geforce rtx 4070

NVIDIADesktop GPURTX 40

A GeForce RTX 40-series desktop graphics card for 1440p gaming and creator work, with 12 GB of memory.

What you need to know

Still a strong 1440p desktop GPU.

The GeForce RTX 4070 is no longer the current GeForce generation, but it remains capable for 1440p gaming, creator work, and everyday GPU acceleration. Twelve gigabytes of memory is the limit that shows up first, not the age of the chip.

Still good?
Yes, especially at 1440p
Product age
3 years old
Upgrade pressure
Low to moderate
Feex says
If games feel slow on this card, I would check the CPU, RAM, and the driver before I shop for a 50-series. Buying a newer 4070-class GPU is an expensive way to stay in the same chair.

What this hardware means today

Age and usefulness are not the same number. This page keeps them separate.

Performance today
Very Good. Still strong for 1440p gaming and creator work when the rest of the PC keeps up. 4K play is possible with upscaling. Native 4K is where 12 GB starts to argue.
Product age 3 years old
Previous generation. Launched in April 2023. The GeForce RTX 50 series is the current desktop line. A SUPER refresh of this card also exists.
Support status
Supported. Current GeForce Game Ready and Studio drivers still cover this SKU. Windows and current apps continue to use it.
Upgrade pressure
Low to moderate. Upgrade pressure comes from VRAM-heavy games, native 4K, or wanting current-generation features. Not from the card being unusable.

Where does it sit?

Ada Lovelace is the GeForce RTX 40-series desktop line. NVIDIA later sold a SUPER refresh of this card, then moved the current desktop branding to RTX 50.

Performance context

These are qualitative readings, not a fake 8.7 out of 10. Resolution, settings, and the CPU still win.

1080p gaming: Excellent

More GPU than most 1080p setups need. The CPU or a low refresh panel is usually the limit first.

1440p gaming: Very Good

This is the job the card was sold for. High settings stay realistic in current games, especially with DLSS when the title supports it.

4K gaming: Good

Playable with DLSS or similar upscaling. Native 4K with heavy textures is where 12 GB and the memory bus show up.

Ray tracing: Very Good

Third-generation RT cores and DLSS 3 frame generation help when a game actually uses them. Raster-only titles do not get that free lunch.

Creator work: Very Good

GPU acceleration in apps such as Photoshop, plus AV1 encode and decode on this generation. Large video timelines still want more VRAM than 12 GB.

Efficiency: Excellent

NVIDIA rates total graphics power at 200 W. That is modest for this performance class, and one reason the card still makes sense in smaller cases.

Should you upgrade?

Probably not if you already have this card and play at 1440p.

Upgrade makes more sense if

  • You play at native 4K and the 12 GB frame buffer is the limit
  • Current games are GPU-bound at your resolution and settings
  • You need current-generation features your 40-series card does not have
  • Your present GPU is a much older generation and this would be a real step up

Upgrade makes less sense if

  • You already play at 1440p and the card is not the bottleneck
  • The CPU, RAM, or storage is what actually stalls the machine
  • You are shopping for a newer 4070-class card to fix a software or driver problem

Compatibility

Compatibility
Slot PCI Express x16. Designed for PCIe 4.0. Works in a 3.0 slot at the older link rate.
Power 200 W TGP. Founders Edition uses a 16-pin 12VHPWR / 12V-2x6 connector. Many partner cards use one or two 8-pin connectors instead.
Case Length, thickness, and slot count vary by partner cooler. Measure the case, not the SKU name.
PSU NVIDIA lists 650 W system power. A weak or aging unit can still fail even when the wattage label matches.
CPU pairing A weak CPU will cap frame rates at 1080p and 1440p before this GPU does.

The SKU name is not a cooler, a length, or a power plug. Read the exact partner card before you buy or install.

Seat a 16-pin power connector fully. A loose 12VHPWR / 12V-2x6 plug can overheat. That is a connector problem, not a reason to assume the GPU is dead.

Later RTX 4070 boards also shipped with GDDR6 instead of GDDR6X. CUDA count stays 5888. Memory type is on the box, not in the marketing name.

No display after install

The picture comes from this card, not from a CPU with no iGPU. Plug the monitor into the GPU outputs. A black screen with fans spinning is often a power plug, a seated PCIe card, or the display cable, not a failed GPU.

Driver installs, then games crash

Use the GeForce Game Ready or Studio package that matches this generation. A leftover driver from a previous GPU is a common cause. Clean-install the current package before you replace hardware.
