InDesign paginates books. Word writes. Illustrator draws one artboard.

Adobe InDesign is a desktop-publishing app. Facing pages, master pages, and a book file are the job. Microsoft Word is a manuscript. Illustrator is a drawing artboard. The Windows process is InDesign.exe.

If the file is a 200-page catalog, I would open InDesign, not Word and not Illustrator. A missing INDD is a document problem, not a broken Windows printer.

What is Adobe InDesign?

Adobe InDesign is a page-layout application. Spreads, frames, and styles are the document. The Windows executable is InDesign.exe.

If you have never used it

If you have never used InDesign, it is the Adobe app for books, magazines, and multi-page print or PDF. It is not Word. It is not Illustrator. You place text and graphics on pages, then export a press PDF. Install it from Creative Cloud.

What is it used for?

Books and magazines

Facing pages, folios, and a book file. Word can write the manuscript. InDesign paginates it.

Master pages and styles

Repeat headers and paragraph styles across a document. This is layout, not an Illustrator artboard.

Press PDF

Export PDF/X for a printer. Package collects fonts and links so the shop is not missing assets.

Designers who paginate catalogs and magazines
Publishers who take a Word manuscript to print
Anyone who tried to build a 40-page report in Illustrator

Current status

Actively developed as a Creative Cloud desktop app. This article is the Windows InDesign app, not InCopy.

How old is it?

Adobe shipped InDesign in 1999 as the PageMaker successor. It is not new. Current builds are Creative Cloud branded releases. PageMaker is not what you install today.

Common problems

Missing links on open

Placed graphics are references. Package the document before you hand it off. This is not a Windows font cache bug.

Word file treated as the layout

A .docx is the manuscript. Place it. Do not expect Word styles to become InDesign pages by renaming the file.

Getting unstuck

Confirm InDesign.exe

Open file location. Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign is the app. An InDesign.exe in Downloads is not.

Restore links, then fonts

The Links panel names missing graphics. Type > Find/Replace Font is the type pass. Neither is a Windows reinstall.

Export IDML if a file will not open

IDML is the interchange format Adobe documents for older or damaged INDD files.

Alternatives

Affinity Publisher and older QuarkXPress overlap for page layout. Word and Illustrator do not replace InDesign for a multi-page book.

Related hardware

RAM for long documents and a working display profile matter more than a gaming GPU. Linked photography still wants disk space next to the INDD.
