Dropbox
Also called dropbox desktop, dropbox sync
A cloud sync client. The process is Dropbox.exe. OneDrive is Microsoft and a different product.
What you need to know
Dropbox syncs a folder. OneDrive is a different client on the same PC.
Dropbox.exe watches a directory and talks to Dropbox servers. Running it next to OneDrive on the same documents tree is how disks stay busy.
- What is it?
- A folder sync client
- Need it if I use the site?
- Only for Explorer sync
- Same as OneDrive?
- No
What is Dropbox?
Dropbox is Dropbox, Inc.'s sync client. Smart Sync placeholders can wake the client when Explorer opens a file.
If you have never used it
If someone shared a dropbox.com link, you can often download from the website. The Windows app is for a live folder in Explorer. Install it from dropbox.com/install. It is not OneDrive, not Google Drive, and not a Windows component. Two clouds on the same Documents tree is how disks stay busy.
What is it used for?
A Dropbox folder that mirrors the cloud. Dropbox.exe is the worker.
Right-click share from Explorer if the overlay is installed. The site can do the same.
Keep some folders online-only. Opening a placeholder wakes the client.
Who is it for?
- People whose work already lives in Dropbox
- Users who want Explorer overlays
- Anyone who should not stack it on the same tree as OneDrive
Current status
Actively developed. This article is the Windows desktop client, not Dropbox Paper.
How old is it?
Dropbox launched in 2008 as an early consumer cloud folder. It is not a new app. OneDrive and Google Drive grew later on the same idea. Dropbox Paper is a docs product, not this sync client.

Common problems
Two sync clients
Dropbox plus OneDrive on one tree double-writes. Move one root.
Explorer overlay lag
The shell extension rides explorer.exe. The worker is still Dropbox.
Getting unstuck
Pick one cloud root if OneDrive is also installed
Two clients writing the same tree double the disk. Move one folder.
Pause sync from the tray before you debug Explorer
The overlay rides explorer.exe. The worker is still Dropbox.exe.
Install from dropbox.com/install
A "Dropbox sync tool" from a search ad is the wrong file.
Alternatives
OneDrive, a mapped share, or the Dropbox website. Pick them for the account you already have.

An SSD makes the first sync hurt less. A spinning disk plus two clouds is the worst case.
