Microsoft Word
Also called word, ms word, winword
The Microsoft document editor. On Windows the process is WINWORD.EXE. It is one app inside a 365 or perpetual Office install, not the suite itself.
What you need to know
Word is WINWORD.EXE. Microsoft 365 is the suite that often installs it.
Microsoft Word edits .docx and older .doc files. You still launch Word as its own window. The Microsoft 365 page covers the subscription and installer, not this document canvas.
- What is it?
- The Word document app
- Same as Microsoft 365?
- No. 365 is the suite name
- Same as Notepad?
- No. Notepad is notepad.exe
What is Microsoft Word?
Microsoft Word is the document processor in Office and Microsoft 365. The Windows executable is WINWORD.EXE under the Click-to-Run Office16 folder on current installs.
If you have never used it
If you need to write a letter, a resume, or a school paper with headings and page numbers, this is the Word app, not the Microsoft 365 billing page and not Notepad. Install it from a Microsoft 365 or Office setup, or open Word from Start after that install. You do not download a lone WINWORD.EXE from a filename site. Notepad is already on Windows and only does plain text.
What is it used for?
Letters, reports, and .docx files with styles, headers, and track changes.
Form letters and official templates. Excel workbooks are a different app even when Word inserts a table.
PDF export, comments, and compare. That still happens inside WINWORD, not inside the 365 admin center.
Who is it for?
- Anyone who was told to "open it in Word"
- Students and offices that live in .docx
- People who should not confuse this window with Notepad or the 365 suite page
Current status
Actively developed as a Microsoft 365 App and as perpetual Word in some Office boxes. This article is desktop Word on Windows, not Word on the web.
How old is it?
Word for MS-DOS shipped in 1983. Windows Word followed in the late 1980s. Current Word still uses the WINWORD.EXE image name. It is not a 2020s startup app, and it is not the Microsoft 365 brand that arrived in 2020.
Versions

System requirements
Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

- GPU demand
- Light unless the doc is heavy with graphics

Common problems
People search the suite when Word will not start
Repair Microsoft 365 Apps, then test WINWORD. A Teams outage is a different product.
Macros and add-ins hang the canvas
winword /safe is the Word add-in test. It does not apply to Notepad.
Getting unstuck
Confirm it is WINWORD, not Notepad
Open file location. Office16\WINWORD.EXE is Word. notepad.exe cannot keep .docx styles.
Start Word in Safe Mode
winword /safe skips COM add-ins. That is Office Safe Mode, not Windows Safe Mode.
Repair the suite installer, do not replace the exe
Settings > Apps > Microsoft 365 > Modify > Quick Repair. Do not download WINWORD.EXE from a search ad.
Alternatives
LibreOffice Writer, Google Docs, and Notepad overlap for simpler text. They do not replace a work template that requires desktop Word fields.

Related hardware
A current Windows PC with 4 GB class RAM runs short documents. Large books with images want more RAM and an SSD. Word is rarely the GPU hog in a 365 install.
