Spotify
Also called spotify desktop, spotify app
Spotify's desktop music client. The process is Spotify.exe. Windows Audio still mixes the device in audiodg.exe.
What you need to know
Spotify is a player. It is not the Windows audio service.
The desktop app caches tracks and can start with Windows. The website covers casual listening without a resident Spotify.exe.
- What is it?
- A music client
- Need it installed?
- The site also plays
- Startup?
- Optional tray
What is Spotify?
Spotify is the official Windows client from Spotify AB. Store and Win32 installers both exist. Cracked "premium" builds are a different file.
If you have never used it
If you want Spotify playlists in a tray player, this is the official desktop app. You can also play at open.spotify.com in a browser. Download the client from spotify.com/download/windows. It is not Windows Media Player, not iTunes, and not a codec pack.
What is it used for?
Catalog playback while signed in. The Windows audio graph still belongs to audiodg.exe.
Cached tracks on disk. They still need a periodic sign-in. This is not a DRM-free MP3 dump.
Optional local files you add in settings. Most people never use this.
Who is it for?
- People with a Spotify account who want a tray player
- Users who already downloaded music for offline
- Anyone who should not confuse this with Windows Media Player
Current status
Actively developed. This article is the desktop Windows client, not the car or TV apps.
How old is it?
Spotify the service launched in 2008 in Europe and reached the US later. The Windows desktop client has been the usual PC player since then. It is not a 2020s startup. Windows Media Player and Winamp are older local-file players with a different job.
Versions

Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

Common problems
CPU while paused
Toggle hardware acceleration in Spotify. Do not disable Windows Audio.
Cracked clients
Those reuse the name and none of the publisher story.
Getting unstuck
Toggle hardware acceleration if CPU stays high while paused
That is a Spotify setting. Do not disable Windows Audio to "fix" a player.
Clear cache from Spotify support steps
A huge cache is offline downloads or leftover cache, not a dying SSD by itself.
Install from spotify.com/download/windows
Search ads and "Spotify premium unlocked" installers are the usual bait.
Alternatives
YouTube Music, Apple Music, and VLC for local files. Pick them for the catalog you already pay for.

A working DAC or headset matters more than a gaming GPU. Hardware acceleration can still load the GPU.
