How to read Task Manager

Task Manager shows symptoms. The useful next click is what the name is, whether it is Windows or an app, and whether ending it is safe. This guide is that order.

Feex says
I treat Task Manager like a label maker. The name is a clue. The path is the evidence. End Task is a last move, not a greeting.

Open it the simple way

Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc. That opens Task Manager on current Windows. Ctrl+Alt+Delete also works, then choose Task Manager. You do not need a third-party tool for a first look.

Read the name first

The Processes tab shows friendly names such as Antimalware Service Executable. The Details tab shows the executable, such as MsMpEng.exe. Search either name on Feex Wiki. The friendly name and the exe are the same work more often than not.

Then check the path

Right-click the process, open properties, and look at the location. Windows components usually live under System32 or a WindowsApps or Defender platform folder. An unexpected folder is a better signal than a scary name.

Then read CPU, memory, disk, and GPU

A short spike while you copy files or open an app is often normal. A process that stays at the top while the PC is idle needs the article for that name. Do not end csrss.exe or lsass.exe to free a few megabytes.

  • CPU: work happening now
  • Memory: what it is holding
  • Disk: reading or writing
  • GPU: drawing or compute

When End task is reasonable

End task is reasonable for a stuck app you opened, after you saved what you can. It is a bad first step for Service Host, Defender, or anything in System32 you do not recognize. Open the wiki article first.
