Alder Lake
Also called alder lake, 12th gen, alder lake-s
Intel 12th-generation Core architecture. Desktop parts use LGA1700 and mix performance cores with efficiency cores.
What you need to know
Alder Lake is the 12th-gen hybrid Core line.
Desktop Alder Lake chips sit on LGA1700 and mix performance cores with efficiency cores. The i7-12700KF is a common example. Later 13th and 14th-gen parts stayed on the same socket.

What Alder Lake is
Alder Lake is Intel's 12th-generation Core architecture. Desktop SKUs introduced a hybrid mix of performance cores (P-cores) and efficiency cores (E-cores) on the LGA1700 socket.
What it means on a PC
Windows schedules work across both core types. Everyday apps often land on E-cores. Games and heavy threads prefer P-cores. Task Manager can show both. That split is expected, not a broken CPU.
Upgrade notes
A later LGA1700 chip can fit the same board only if the vendor BIOS list includes it. Read the motherboard CPU list. Do not assume a 14th-gen part posts on an untouched 2021 BIOS.
- Confirm the board list
- Update BIOS before you swap
- KF SKUs still need a discrete GPU
