Adobe Acrobat Reader
Also called adobe reader, acrobat reader dc, acrord32
Adobe's free PDF viewer. Classic 32-bit installs use AcroRd32.exe. Editing needs Acrobat or another editor. It is not Acrobat Pro.
What you need to know
Reader is the free viewer. Acrobat Pro is the paid editor.
get.adobe.com/reader is Acrobat Reader. Classic installs are AcroRd32.exe. A 64-bit unified Reader can share Acrobat.exe with the paid app. The About box and the Adobe account decide which product you have. Acrobat Pro is the sibling this page is not.

- Can it edit pages?
- No. That needs Acrobat or another editor

- AcroRd32.exe, or Acrobat.exe on 64-bit Reader
What is Adobe Acrobat Reader?
Adobe Acrobat Reader is the free PDF viewer. AcroRd32.exe is the historic 32-bit image. Acrobat Pro is the paid editor. If About Adobe Acrobat Reader is what you see, you do not have the editor.
If you have never used it
If you only need to open a PDF, this is free Acrobat Reader, not Acrobat Pro. Download it from get.adobe.com/reader. The paid editor lives at adobe.com/acrobat. Classic Windows Reader is AcroRd32.exe. Newer 64-bit unified installs may show Acrobat.exe even when you only have the free viewer. You still cannot edit pages until you license Acrobat.
What is it used for?
Open a syllabus or a form preview. Acrobat Pro is what you buy to rewrite the pages.
Reader can fill many fields. Creating or heavily editing a form is Acrobat.
Sticky notes and highlights. Full organize-pages is still a Pro feature.
Who is it for?
- Anyone who just needs to read a PDF
- PCs that should not install the paid editor
- People confused by a 64-bit Reader that shows Acrobat.exe
Current status
Actively developed. Adobe still offers a free Reader download. This article is the viewer, not Acrobat Pro.
How old is it?
Adobe shipped Acrobat and a free Reader together in the 1990s. Reader remains the viewer SKU. Acrobat Pro remains the paid editor. The 64-bit unified installer blurred the exe name. It did not merge the products.
Versions

System requirements
Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.
Minimum
| Operating system | A current Windows release Adobe lists for Reader |
|---|---|
| RAM | Adobe lists modest RAM for Reader. Huge PDFs want more |

Common problems
Edit tools greyed out
That is Reader. Buy Acrobat or use another editor. Reinstalling Reader will not add Pro.
Optional McAfee or extra offers on the download page
Uncheck bundles on Adobe's official Reader page. A third-party "Reader download" is worse.
Getting unstuck
Read the About box
Acrobat Reader versus Acrobat Pro. If it says Reader, you have the free viewer. AcroRd32.exe is the classic image. Acrobat.exe can still be Reader on 64-bit unified installs.
Download only from get.adobe.com/reader
adobe.com/acrobat is the paid editor page. Filename sites that say "Acrobat Reader free" are a common junk path.
If you needed to edit, go to the Acrobat article
Do not hunt for a hidden Pro switch inside Reader. The products are licensed apart.
Alternatives
Sumatra PDF, Foxit PDF Reader, and Edge overlap for viewing. Adobe Acrobat is the paid editor sibling.
Official help and downloads
Start with the vendor. Random exe sites are not a support channel.
| Download | get.adobe.com/reader/ Official installer or vendor page |
|---|---|
| Help | helpx.adobe.com/reader.html Vendor support |
| Official site | get.adobe.com/reader/ Start here, not a random exe host |
Related hardware
The viewer is heavier than Sumatra. Huge scanned PDFs still want RAM.
