Autodesk 3ds Max is a 3D modeling and rendering application aimed at viz and games. The Windows executable is 3dsmax.exe.
If you have never used it
3ds Max is Autodesk's Windows 3D app for visualization and games. 3dsmax.exe is the process. It is not Maya. Maya is the film animation sibling. 3D Studio for DOS is the ancestor. Install from Autodesk.
What is it used for?
Still scenes and walkthroughs. Maya can do this. Max is the common viz seat.
FBX and engine pipelines. Maya overlaps. The .max file stays here.
Max's stack is not Maya's node graph. That is the sibling-swap difference.
Who is it for?

Common problems
Opened Maya by habit
maya.exe does not open a .max scene natively. Use FBX or keep Max.
Old plugin for a new year
Year versions break plugins. Install the matching Max build.
Getting unstuck
Confirm 3dsmax.exe
Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max is the app. Maya is maya.exe.
Install from Autodesk Access
A 3dsmax.exe in Downloads is not the suite.
Safe mode / plugin skip
Hold Shift or use Autodesk's documented plugin disable if launch fails.
Alternatives
Maya, Blender, and Cinema 4D overlap. Maya does not replace a .max viz seat.
