Avira
Also called avira antivirus, avira prime, avira free
A German antivirus now under Gen Digital. The host is Avira.ServiceHost.exe. It is not Avast, even though they share a parent.
What you need to know
Avira is the German Gen brand. Avast is a sister, not a second engine.
Avira sits under Gen Digital with Avast, AVG, and Norton. Avira.ServiceHost.exe is this product. Installing Avast beside it is a same-parent double. Avira plus live Defender is the other fight.
- What is it?
- German AV now under Gen
- Same as Avast?
- No. Sister brand, different exe
- Run both?
- No. One Gen suite
What is Avira?
Avira is Gen Digital's German antivirus brand. Avira.ServiceHost.exe is the service host. Avast is a sister, not this exe.
If you have never used it
If the tray ant is Avira, this is the German brand, not Avast. Download from avira.com. Gen Digital owns Avira, Avast, AVG, and Norton. Avira.ServiceHost.exe is this product. Do not also install Avast. Avira should take the antivirus slot. Avira plus live Defender is the two-engine fight.
What is it used for?
Avira Free registers as the active engine. The host is Avira.ServiceHost.exe, not AvastSvc.exe.
Avira Prime adds VPN and extras. That is still Avira, not Norton 360.
Avira's VPN brand is a different exe from the antivirus host.
Who is it for?
- People who used AntiVir or Avira Free for years
- Users who also installed Avast after the Gen merger
- Anyone with Avira.ServiceHost.exe next to live Defender
Current status
Actively developed under Gen Digital. This article is consumer Avira on Windows.
How old is it?
Avira (H+BEDV / AntiVir) is a German line that Gen Digital acquired. Current Windows builds say Avira. A 2008 AntiVir Free box is the same family, not the current One-style installer.

Common problems
Avira plus Avast or AVG
Two Gen engines. Pick Avira or the sister, not both.
Avira plus live Defender
Avira should own realtime. MsMpEng.exe still scanning means the slot failed.
Getting unstuck
Uninstall extra Gen suites
Avast, AVG, and Norton are other Gen storefronts. One resident suite is enough.
Check Windows Security for Avira
The owner page should name Avira after a successful register.
Use avira.com, not avast.com
The Avast fox site is the sister product.
Alternatives
Avast or AVG if you already standardized there. Windows Security if you want no third-party suite.

Related hardware
