What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT.exe is the OpenAI desktop client. GPT-4 class models and ChatGPT Plus billing live on OpenAI's side. Claude Artifacts are not in this window.

If you have never used it

ChatGPT desktop is OpenAI's signed-in window. Install it from chatgpt.com/download. A chatgpt.com tab in Edge is still msedge.exe. Custom GPTs, voice mode, and an OpenAI login are this product. An Anthropic password will bounce.

Current status

OpenAI still ships the Windows build from chatgpt.com/download. The website remains the product if you never install the app.

How old is it?

OpenAI put ChatGPT on the web in November 2022. The Windows app followed in 2024. It is not Cortana, not Clippy, and not the Azure OpenAI Studio portal admins use at work.

Confirm publisher and path

OpenAI under Programs\ChatGPT or WindowsApps is this app. ChatGPT.exe in Temp is not.

OpenAI hosts the official Windows build. A ChatGPT desktop pro listing is junk.

Alternatives

Stay on chatgpt.com if you do not want another app. Microsoft Copilot is a different Microsoft product. Claude desktop will not show your OpenAI chat history.
