Chromium
Also called chromium browser
The open-source browser project Chrome and Edge are built from. Snapshot builds on Windows still use chrome.exe.
What you need to know
Chromium is the project. Google Chrome is the branded, auto-updating product.
Chromium.org documents the engine Chrome and Edge ship. Official Windows snapshots still launch as chrome.exe and do not auto-update. A chrome.exe under Google\Chrome is Chrome.

What is Chromium?
Chromium is the open-source browser and engine project. Google Chrome adds Google services, branding, and an updater.
If you have never used it
If a guide said use Chromium, not Chrome, this is the project, not google.com/chrome. Official snapshots launch chrome.exe and do not auto-update. Google Chrome is the branded installer with an updater. Edge is Microsoft Chromium. Third-party Chromium stable sites are not the project.
What is it used for?
Developers grab snapshots to see if a Chromium fix landed. That is the use the project documents.
Some people run snapshots as a browser. The project tells most people to use Chrome because snapshots lack the updater.
Chrome, Edge, Opera, and Brave build on this code. Those products are not this snapshot zip.
Who is it for?
- Developers checking a Chromium revision
- People who were told to avoid Google Chrome branding
- Anyone who downloaded Chromium from a filename mill
Current status
Chromium (2008) is a current web browser from The Chromium Authors. The vendor still points Windows users at https://www.chromium.org/getting-involved/download-chromium/.
How old is it?
Google open-sourced Chromium in 2008 when Chrome launched. It is the same age as Chrome, not a 2020s privacy startup. Official Windows binaries are continuous snapshots.

System requirements
Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.
Minimum
| Operating system | A current supported Windows 10 or Windows 11 release, per the vendor |
|---|---|
| RAM | Enough for Windows plus this app. Heavy projects want more. |
Resource profile
- CPU demand
- Follows what you open inside the app
- RAM demand
- Follows documents, tabs, or libraries

These executables belong to this product when it is installed.

Startup components
Snapshots do not install the Google updater. If something updates this chrome.exe, it is not the official snapshot zip.
File locations
| Typical install | A chrome-win folder you unzipped, not Program Files\Google\Chrome |

Common problems
No auto-update
Official snapshots stay on the revision you downloaded. That is a security gap for daily use.
chrome.exe name collision
Task Manager cannot tell Chrome from Chromium by name. Open file location.
Getting unstuck
Open file location on chrome.exe
Google\Chrome is Google Chrome. A chrome-win snapshot folder is Chromium.
Prefer Chrome if you wanted an updater
chromium.org says Chrome builds auto-update. A snapshot is for testing.
Skip random latest Chromium sites
The project points at the snapshot bucket. A third-party Chromium 120 stable installer is not that page.
Alternatives
Google Chrome for a branded updater. ungoogled-chromium if you want community patches that strip Google integration.
Official help and downloads
Start with the vendor. Random exe sites are not a support channel.

Related hardware
Same class as Chrome: RAM and a current GPU driver. Snapshots can be less stable than Chrome Stable.
