CMake
Also called cmake gui, kitware cmake
Kitware's build-file generator. cmake.exe writes Visual Studio or Ninja files. It does not replace MSVC or rustc.
What you need to know
CMake generates build files. It is not a compiler.
cmake.exe from Kitware writes project files for Visual Studio, Ninja, and others. cl.exe and link.exe still come from MSVC. rustc and go are different languages. Installing CMake does not install Visual Studio.
- What is it?
- Build-file generator
- Is it a compiler?
- No. You still need MSVC or similar
- Replaces Visual Studio?
- No. It can generate a .sln
What is CMake?
CMake is a meta-build system. It generates Visual Studio solutions, Ninja files, and others. It is not cl.exe, not rustc, and not MSBuild itself.
If you have never used it
If a C++ README said install CMake, get it from cmake.org/download. cmake.exe generates build files. It is not a compiler. You still need MSVC, Ninja, or another toolchain. rustc.exe and go.exe are different languages. CMake will not replace devenv.exe.
What is it used for?
cmake -G "Visual Studio 17 2022". devenv.exe then opens that .sln. CMake did not compile it yet.
Ninja plus MSVC or GCC. cargo and go have their own build graphs.
CMakePresets.json in current projects. That file is not a compiler binary.
Who is it for?
- C and C++ developers whose repo starts with CMakeLists.txt
- People who installed CMake and wondered why cl.exe was missing
- Anyone who thought CMake replaced Visual Studio
Current status
CMake (2000) is a current build generator from Kitware. The vendor still points Windows users at https://cmake.org/download/.
How old is it?
Kitware released CMake in 2000 for large C++ trees. It is older than Rust and Go. Current 3.x/4.x releases are the product. A 2.8-only tutorial may miss modern presets.
Versions
Major channels first. Exact build numbers are not all verified here.
System requirements
Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.
Minimum
| Operating system | A current 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11 release, per Kitware |
|---|---|
| RAM | The generator is small. The compile it starts is the heavy step |
Resource profile
- CPU demand
- Follows what you open inside the app
- RAM demand
- Follows documents, tabs, or libraries

Startup components
CMake does not start with Windows. You run it in a build folder.

Common problems
Configure succeeds, compile fails
CMake found a generator. The compiler or SDK is still missing. That is an MSVC or Windows SDK problem.
Wrong generator for the installed VS
"Visual Studio 17 2022" needs VS 2022. CMake cannot invent devenv.exe.
Getting unstuck
cmake --version and where.exe cmake
Expect Program Files\CMake\bin. A stray cmake.exe in a venv is a different story.
Install from cmake.org/download
Kitware hosts the MSI. A CMake pack bundled with a random compiler zip is junk.
Install Visual Studio or Build Tools if you wanted MSVC
The Visual Studio Installer adds cl.exe. CMake will then detect it.
Alternatives
Meson and Bazel are other meta-build systems. MSBuild is what a VS generator often targets. CMake is still the common C++ front door.
