GOG GALAXY
Also called gog galaxy, gog client, galaxy client
CD Projekt’s DRM-free store client that can also overlay other launchers. The process is GalaxyClient.exe. It is not Steam.
What you need to know
GOG sells DRM-free installers. Steam and Epic do not.
GalaxyClient.exe is optional for many GOG purchases because gog.com still hosts offline installers. That is the opposite of EA’s “you need the EA app even on Steam” rule.
- What is it?
- GOG’s DRM-free store client
- Need it to play a GOG game?
- Often no. Offline installers exist
- Same as Steam?
- No. GOG’s installer story is the difference
What is GOG GALAXY?
GOG GALAXY is CD Projekt’s Windows client. GalaxyClient.exe updates GOG titles and can list games you connected from other stores. The classic GOG offline installer still exists without this client.
If you have never used it
If you buy from GOG because you want a DRM-free installer you can archive, this is Galaxy, CD Projekt’s optional client. Download it from gog.com/galaxy. You can also download offline installers from gog.com without Galaxy. That sentence is false for Steam, Epic, EA, Ubisoft, Battle.net, and Riot. Galaxy can import other launchers as a overlay library. It is not Valve’s store.
What is it used for?
Install titles you bought on gog.com. Epic, EA, Ubisoft, Battle.net, and Riot do not hand you that same offline installer story.
gog.com still hosts installers you can keep. Steam’s steam.exe cannot be skipped that way for a typical Valve title.
Galaxy 2.0 can connect Steam, Epic, and others as a list. Playnite does that job as open source without being a store. Galaxy is still a GOG product first.
Who is it for?
- People who buy on GOG for offline installers
- Users who want Galaxy as a combined overlay
- Anyone who should not treat GalaxyClient.exe as Steam
Current status
GOG GALAXY (2014) is a current drm-free store client from CD Projekt. The vendor still points Windows users at https://www.gog.com/galaxy.
How old is it?
GOG began as Good Old Games with offline installers. Galaxy 1.0 arrived in 2014 and Galaxy 2.0 later tried to be a universal overlay. It is newer than Steam and built around a DRM-free promise Epic’s launcher does not make.

Common problems
People think Galaxy is mandatory like Steam
Many GOG games install from an offline exe on gog.com. Galaxy is convenience and overlay, not the only legal path.
Imported Steam game will not launch
Galaxy is listing another launcher’s title. The repair still happens in Steam, not in a GOG verify.
Getting unstuck
Install Galaxy from gog.com/galaxy
CD Projekt hosts the client. A “GOG plus extras” pack is bait.
Grab the offline installer from your GOG account if Galaxy fails
That fallback is the GOG difference. Epic and EA do not give you the same unsigned-by-GOG archive path.
Disconnect a linked store if the overlay fights the real launcher
Galaxy settings control connections. Playnite is the other unifier if you want that job without GOG’s store.
Alternatives
Steam for the Valve library. Heroic as an unofficial GOG plus Epic shell. Playnite if you only want a unifier and not a store.
