GPU-Z

ApplicationTechPowerUp

Also called gpuz, gpu-z, techpowerup gpu-z

TechPowerUpSystem

Identifies a GPU and its sensors. The process is GPU-Z.exe. It is not a driver and it is not CPU-Z.

What you need to know

GPU-Z identifies the graphics card. It is not a driver and not CPU-Z.

TechPowerUp GPU-Z names the GPU and shows sensors. Get it from techpowerup.com/gpuz. CPU-Z is CPUID's CPU and RAM tool. A graphics driver is a separate vendor install.

What is it?
A GPU identifier and sensor window
Is it a driver?
No. Install NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel separately
Same as CPU-Z?
No. CPU-Z is CPUID's CPU tool
Feex says
If the GPU name is the question, I would open GPU-Z, not CPU-Z. I would still install the vendor driver from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel. GPU-Z is not that installer.

What is GPU-Z?

GPU-Z reports graphics adapter identity and sensors. GPU-Z.exe is a single-file tool on many installs. Installing it does not install a driver. CPU-Z is a different vendor.

If you have never used it

If you need the GPU name, BIOS version, or sensor list, GPU-Z is TechPowerUp's identifier. Download it from techpowerup.com/gpuz. It is not a graphics driver. It is not CPU-Z, which names the processor and RAM.

What is it used for?

Read GPU name, VRAM, and BIOS version

The Graphics Card tab is identity. CPU-Z will not give you this BIOS string.

Watch sensors

The Sensors tab shows clocks and temperatures the GPU reports. That is still not a driver package.

Save a BIOS or a validation screenshot

Advanced extras live in the window. They do not replace GeForce, AMD, or Intel driver setup.

Who is it for?

  • People buying a used GPU and checking the BIOS
  • Anyone told to "post GPU-Z" on a forum
  • Users who opened CPU-Z and wondered where the video card went

Current status

GPU-Z (2007) is a current gpu identifier from TechPowerUp. The vendor still points Windows users at https://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/.

How old is it?

GPU-Z launched in 2007. CPU-Z is older (2000) and from CPUID, not TechPowerUp. Current GPU-Z still tracks new NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel GPUs as the vendor adds them.

Versions

Major channels first. Exact build numbers are not all verified here.

Installer
Portable exe

System requirements

Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

Minimum

Minimum system requirements
Operating system Windows 10 or Windows 11, per TechPowerUp's current GPU-Z page
RAM Enough for Windows plus this app. Heavy projects want more.

Resource profile

CPU demand
Low
GPU demand
Sensor polling. Not a 3D bench unless you start one elsewhere

Installed processes

These executables belong to this product when it is installed.

Installed processes
GPU-Z.exe GPU identity window

Startup components

GPU-Z can minimize to the tray for sensors. That is optional. It is not a driver service.

File locations

Common GPU-Z locations
Typical install C:\Program Files\GPU-Z\

File formats

TXT reports and optional BIOS files

Common problems

People think installing GPU-Z updates the driver

It only reads the card. Use the NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel installer for drivers.

Sensors blank on a very new GPU

Wait for a GPU-Z update, or read HWiNFO. CPU-Z will not fill this gap.

Getting unstuck

Download from techpowerup.com/gpuz

A "GPU-Z driver pack" exe is not TechPowerUp. CPU-Z is the other identity tool if you wanted the processor.

If the GPU tab says unknown, update GPU-Z after a new card launch

The database lags a week sometimes. That is GPU-Z, not a missing CPU-Z tab.

Install the vendor driver if clocks look stuck at idle

GPU-Z reports what the driver exposes. A basic Microsoft Basic Display Adapter limits the sensors.

Alternatives

HWiNFO for a wider sensor list. CPU-Z for CPU and RAM. Vendor control panels for actual driver settings.

Related hardware

GPU-Z reads the installed graphics adapter. It does not add Feex sensors. The GPU and driver supply the values.
