Inkscape
Also called inkscape svg, inkscape editor
An SVG vector editor. inkscape.exe is the process. It is not Illustrator.
What you need to know
Inkscape is SVG-native. Illustrator is AI-native.
Inkscape edits SVG under a GPL license. Illustrator is Adobe's paid vector app. Opening an AI file here is a compatibility path, not Illustrator.

What is Inkscape?
Inkscape is an open-source vector editor. Paths live in SVG. The Windows executable is inkscape.exe.
If you have never used it
Inkscape is a free SVG editor. The native save is SVG. It is not Illustrator. An AI file is Adobe's format. Download the Windows build from inkscape.org/release.
What is it used for?
Logos and icons as SVG. Illustrator uses AI. This app saves SVG first.
Path > Trace Bitmap. That is Inkscape, not Illustrator's Image Trace.
Export PDF or PNG. The working file is still SVG.
Who is it for?
- People who want free vectors
- Web folks who live in SVG
- Anyone who opened Illustrator for a simple icon
Current status
Inkscape (2003) is a current svg vector editor from Inkscape Project. The vendor still points Windows users at https://inkscape.org/release/.
How old is it?
Inkscape forked from Sodipodi and shipped in 2003. It is younger than Illustrator (1987) and it is still an SVG-native project. Current Windows builds are the Inkscape Project releases.

Common problems
AI file opened with missing effects
Live effects in Illustrator do not all survive SVG. Redraw or keep the AI in Illustrator.
Fonts substituted on open
SVG embeds or references type. Install the font. This is not a Windows repair.
Getting unstuck
Confirm inkscape.exe
Program Files\Inkscape is the app. An unsigned inkscape.exe in Downloads is not.
Install from inkscape.org/release
That page is the official Windows build.
Save as Inkscape SVG if extensions vanish
Plain SVG drops Inkscape-only data. That is a save choice, not a crash.
Alternatives
Illustrator, Affinity Designer, and CorelDRAW overlap. Illustrator does not replace Inkscape for a free SVG workflow.
