MediaMonkey
Also called media monkey
A library-centric local player. The process is MediaMonkey.exe. It is not foobar2000.
What you need to know
MediaMonkey is a library manager that plays. foobar2000 is a configurable player.
MediaMonkey.exe wants to scan and organize. foobar2000 wants you to add a folder and configure columns. Both play local files. The jobs are not the same.
- What is it?
- A library-centric local player
- Same as foobar2000?
- No. MediaMonkey is organize-first
- Gold?
- Paid extras from Ventis. Not a crack
What is MediaMonkey?
MediaMonkey is Ventis Media’s Windows library player. MediaMonkey.exe scans, tags, and plays files you already own.
If you have never used it
If you want a player that auto-organizes a huge local collection, this is MediaMonkey. Download it from mediamonkey.com/download. Point it at your music folders. It is not foobar2000. foobar is columns and components. MediaMonkey is a library manager that also plays. Gold is the paid edition Ventis sells.
What is it used for?
Rename and folder files from tags. foobar2000 can edit tags, but MediaMonkey markets this as the center of the product.
Play the scanned library. There is no Spotify catalog behind the window.
Ventis sells Gold for extra tools. That is a license dialog, not a foobar component.
Who is it for?
- People with a large tagged collection they want auto-organized
- Users who already bought MediaMonkey Gold
- Anyone who should not confuse this with foobar2000’s component culture
Current status
MediaMonkey (2001) is a current local music library from Ventis Media. The vendor still points Windows users at https://www.mediamonkey.com/download.
How old is it?
MediaMonkey started in 2001 in the same local-library era as early iTunes on Windows. It is old and still sold. A 2006 “Gold adds CD rip” memory may not match the current edition list.

Common problems
Scan rewrote paths you did not want
Auto-organize is the product. Preview the destination before you let it rename a whole drive.
Gold nag
The free tier is real. Unofficial Gold keys are malware bait.
Getting unstuck
Install from mediamonkey.com/download
The vendor hosts the installer. Portal bundles are the usual extras.
Pause auto-organize if files vanished from a folder
Check MediaMonkey’s destination paths. The files were often moved, not deleted by Windows.
Repair the library database from vendor steps
Support documents database rebuilds. That is faster than a Windows reinstall.
Alternatives
MusicBee for tag tools with a different UI. foobar2000 for components. iTunes if the library is still an Apple folder.
