Films & TV

Also called movies and tv, movies & tv, films and tv

Microsoft CorporationSystem

The Windows Store video app, also called Movies & TV. The process is Video.UI.exe. It is not VLC.

What you need to know

Films & TV is the Store locker. VLC is a file player.

Video.UI.exe holds Microsoft movie entitlements. New Store sales stopped in 2025. Local files are a side job. VLC does not read those purchases.

What is it?

Process?
Video.UI.exe
Same as VLC?
No. This plays Store licenses VLC cannot
Feex says
If the movie is a Microsoft Store purchase, I would open Films & TV signed in with that account. VLC will not help, and the new Media Player is the wrong locker.

What is Films & TV?

Films & TV is Microsoft’s Store video locker. Video.UI.exe plays purchases and can open some local videos. It is not VLC and not wmplayer.exe.

If you have never used it

If you bought or rented a movie from the Microsoft Store, this is the app that still plays it. The Store listing says Films & TV. Many PCs still say Movies & TV. The process is Video.UI.exe. It is not VLC. VLC will not show those Store licenses. Microsoft stopped selling new Movies & TV titles in 2025. Old purchases stay in this app, not in the new Media Player.

What is it used for?

Microsoft movie purchases

Play titles you already bought in the Store. VLC cannot open that license. The new Media Player also does not replace this locker.

Local video fallback

Some MP4 files still open here. VLC covers odd containers this app will refuse.

Xbox-era locker

The same purchase can still appear on Xbox. That is a Microsoft account entitlement, not a file in Videos\.

Who is it for?

  • People who bought Movies & TV titles before Microsoft stopped new sales
  • Users whose default video app is still Films & TV
  • Anyone who should not replace this with VLC if the goal is a Store license

Current status

Films & TV (2012) is a current store video app from Microsoft Corporation. The vendor still points Windows users at https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9wzdncrfj3p2.

How old is it?

The app began as Xbox Video in 2012, then Movies & TV, and Films & TV in some regions. Microsoft ended new Store movie sales in 2025 and still points purchases at this app. A 2016 “rent a 4K movie in the Store” guide is this product, now in wind-down for new buys.

File locations

Common Films & TV locations
Typical install C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\Microsoft.ZuneVideo_*\

File formats

Store movie licensessome local MP4

Common problems

Purchase missing after a new PC

Sign in with the Microsoft account that bought the title. The file is not sitting in Videos\ for VLC to find.

Odd MKV will not play

Use VLC. This app is a Store locker, not a codec Swiss army knife.

Getting unstuck

Install Films & TV from the Microsoft Store

The package id Microsoft documents is the Store listing. A “Movies TV setup.exe” is bait.

Sign in with the purchasing account

Entitlements follow the Microsoft account. The new Media Player will not list those buys.

Treat 2025 as end of new sales, not end of playback

Microsoft still points old purchases at this app. If playback fails, Support is the path, not VLC.

Alternatives

VLC for local files. The new Store Media Player for simple local playback. Legacy WMP for CD rip.
