Norton is the Symantec-era suite now under Gen Digital. 360 and Antivirus are different licenses. The trial leftover plus live Defender is a common two-engine mess. Avast and AVG are sister Gen brands with other exes.

What is Norton?
Norton is Gen Digital's flagship consumer suite. 360 is the bundle. Antivirus is the thinner SKU. NortonSecurity.exe is a common process name.
If you have never used it
If a trial nag says Norton, check whether the license is Norton 360 or Norton Antivirus. They are different SKUs under Gen Digital. Download from norton.com. Symantec is the old company name. NortonSecurity.exe is this family. It should take the antivirus slot. A leftover OEM trial plus still-live Defender is the two-engine fight. This is not Avast and not Windows Security.
What is it used for?
The suite registers as the active engine so Defender can go passive.
VPN, backup, and dark-web extras sit in 360. Norton Antivirus does not mean that whole bundle.
Many PCs ship a Norton trial. The nag is a license reminder, not proof Windows is infected.
Who is it for?
- People dismissing a preinstalled Norton trial
- Users who paid for 360 and wondered why Antivirus was also listed
- Anyone with NortonSecurity.exe next to a live MsMpEng.exe
Current status
Actively sold by Gen Digital. This article is consumer Norton on Windows, not Symantec Endpoint Protection.
How old is it?
Peter Norton and then Symantec sold this line from the 1990s. NortonLifeLock later joined Avast as Gen Digital. Current storefronts say Norton 360 more than Symantec Endpoint. A 2003 LiveUpdate CD is not the current installer.

Common problems
OEM trial plus live Defender
The trial can leave NortonSecurity.exe resident while MsMpEng.exe still scans. Pick one owner in Windows Security or remove the trial.
360 versus Antivirus mismatch
A 360 feature missing from the window often means the license is Antivirus. That is a SKU, not a broken GPU.
Getting unstuck
Remove the trial if you will not pay
Use Windows Settings > Apps or Norton Remove and Reinstall Support Tool from support.norton.com. Do not delete Program Files by hand.
Check the SKU in the Norton account
360, Antivirus, and add-on VPN seats are separate line items.
Confirm Defender went passive
Windows Security should name Norton after a successful paid or trial register. Both live is the fight.
Alternatives
Windows Security if you drop the trial. Avast or AVG if you already live in those Gen brands. Do not run two Gen suites live.

Related hardware
The resident suite plus cloud backup extras want RAM and disk. An HDD scan is the slow case.
