PotPlayer
Also called pot player, daum potplayer
A Korean video player that still shows up in codec-pack era advice. The process is PotPlayerMini64.exe. It is not VLC.
What you need to know
PotPlayer is Kakao’s dense video player. VLC is VideoLAN’s cone.
PotPlayerMini64.exe still appears in old codec-pack advice. The official download is potplayer.daum.net. vlc.exe is a different vendor.
- What is it?
- Kakao's Windows video player
- Same as VLC?
- No. Different vendor and settings tree
- Need a codec pack?
- No. Take potplayer.daum.net only
What is PotPlayer?
PotPlayer is Kakao’s Windows video player. PotPlayerMini64.exe is the usual 64-bit process.
If you have never used it
If a Korean forum or an old codec-pack guide named PotPlayer, this is Kakao’s (Daum’s) Windows player. Download it from potplayer.daum.net, not from a pack that also installs toolbars. The 64-bit window is usually PotPlayerMini64.exe. It is not VLC. VideoLAN does not ship this Korean settings tree or this exe name.
What is it used for?
Open MKV and MP4 with a dense right-click menu. VLC covers the same files with a different UI.
PotPlayer exposes many codec and renderer toggles. That density is why codec-pack guides named it. VLC hides more of that.
Cycle tracks from the menu. This is still not a Plex server.
Who is it for?
- People following a Korean or codec-pack-era player recommendation
- Users who already have PotPlayerMini64.exe on a Foxhole PC
- Anyone who should skip the pack and take potplayer.daum.net
Current status
PotPlayer (2008) is a current video player from Kakao. The vendor still points Windows users at https://potplayer.daum.net/.
How old is it?
PotPlayer appeared in 2008 from Daum, later Kakao. It sat next to KMPlayer in the late codec-pack years. It is newer than VLC 2001 and still maintained. A 2011 “install K-Lite then PotPlayer” ritual is the era to unlearn.

System requirements
Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

|---|---|
| RAM | Light for 1080p. 4K wants more RAM and a working GPU |
Resource profile
- CPU demand
- Software decode of heavy files
- GPU demand
- When hardware decode is on

Common problems
Bundled codec pack
Official PotPlayer does not need K-Lite beside it. Portal bundles are the mess.
Korean-first site
daum.net is still the vendor. A random English mirror can be a wrap.
Getting unstuck
Install from potplayer.daum.net
Kakao hosts the player. A PotPlayer.exe inside a pack is the wrong path.
Reset video renderer if the picture is black
Preferences > Video. Try another renderer before you reinstall a GPU driver.
Confirm PotPlayerMini64.exe, not a helper
Open file location. Daum or Kakao folders are the real app.
Alternatives
VLC if you want a simpler official English site. MPC-HC for a Classic fork. mpv for keys and a config file.

Related hardware
Hardware decode helps 4K. Software decode still works on an older iGPU.
