What is Rhino?
Rhino is a NURBS modeling application. Documents live in .3dm files. The Windows executable is Rhino.exe.
If you have never used it
Rhino is McNeel's NURBS modeler for product design. Rhino.exe is the process. It is not AutoCAD. DWG drafting is AutoCAD. A .3dm file is Rhino. Download from rhino3d.com/download. Grasshopper is the visual-script sibling.
What is it used for?
Product and jewelry forms. AutoCAD drafts DWG. This is freeform NURBS.
Visual scripts. That plugin is Rhino, not an AutoCAD LISP routine.
STEP and IGES. DWG is possible. The working file is still .3dm.
Who is it for?
- Product designers
- People running Grasshopper
- Anyone who opened AutoCAD looking for NURBS
Current status
Rhino (1998) is a current nurbs modeling from Robert McNeel & Associates. The vendor still points Windows users at https://www.rhino3d.com/download/.
How old is it?
McNeel shipped Rhinoceros in 1998. AutoCAD is the 1982 DWG standard. Current Rhino is a perpetual Windows license with a service-release train.

Common problems
Expected AutoCAD command line
Rhino has a command line with different names. Type what Rhino documents.
Grasshopper missing
Enable the Grasshopper plugin. It is not an AutoCAD toolset.
Getting unstuck
Confirm Rhino.exe
Program Files\Rhino <version> is the app. acad.exe is AutoCAD.
Install from rhino3d.com/download
A Rhino.exe in Downloads next to a crack is not McNeel.
Reset the Rhino scheme
McNeel documents a settings reset. This is not AutoCAD profiles.
Alternatives
AutoCAD, Fusion 360, and SOLIDWORKS overlap at the edges. AutoCAD does not replace NURBS product work.
