XboxPcApp.exe is the library. GameBar.exe is capture and widgets. Ending the overlay does not cancel a Game Pass download.

What is Xbox?

The Xbox PC app is Microsoft’s Game Pass, friends, and store client on Windows. XboxPcApp.exe is the process. Game Bar is a separate overlay.

If you have never used it

If you pay for PC Game Pass or you want Xbox friends and the Microsoft store on the desktop, this is the Xbox PC app. Install it from xbox.com/play or the Microsoft Store. Sign in with a Microsoft account. It is not Game Bar. Win+G is GameBar.exe, the capture overlay. This window is XboxPcApp.exe, the library and store.

What is it used for?

PC Game Pass library

Install titles in the subscription. Steam will not show that locker. Game Bar cannot download a Game Pass game.

Friends and store

Xbox network chat and Microsoft Store purchases. Discord is a different friend graph.

Cloud and console links

Remote and console features Microsoft documents in this app. That is not Win+G widgets.

Current status

Xbox (2017) is a current game pass and store app from Microsoft Corporation. The vendor still points Windows users at https://www.xbox.com/play.

How old is it?

Microsoft rebuilt the PC Xbox app around Game Pass in the late 2010s. Game Bar is a 2019 overlay with a different exe. A 2015 “Xbox app on Windows 10” memory is an earlier Store package, not necessarily this XboxPcApp.exe.

People open Win+G to manage Game Pass

Wrong exe. Game Bar is the overlay. This app is the store and library.

EA or Ubisoft title still starts another launcher

Game Pass can still require the EA app or Connect. That is a publisher client, not a broken Xbox app.

Getting unstuck

Install from xbox.com/play or the Microsoft Store

Confirm the publisher is Microsoft. A “Game Pass unlocker” is bait.

Sign in with the Microsoft account that holds Game Pass

A work account will look empty. That is licensing, not a missing GPU.

Repair the Xbox app from Settings > Apps

Modify or Repair the Store package. Resetting Game Bar will not restore the library.

Alternatives

Steam for the Valve library. Game Bar only for capture. EA app if the Game Pass title is an EA game that still needs EADesktop.exe.

Related hardware

The app is moderate. Game Pass titles set the GPU bar. Cloud play wants a network more than a local GPU.
