Amazon Music

ApplicationAmazon

Also called amazon music desktop, prime music

AmazonSystem

Amazon's desktop music client. The process is Amazon Music.exe. It is not Spotify.

What you need to know

Amazon Music is Amazon’s catalog client. Spotify is a different locker.

Amazon Music.exe signs in with Amazon. Prime and Unlimited decide what plays. It does not replace Spotify playlists you already built on the other service.

What is it?
Amazon's desktop music client
Need Prime?
Prime includes a catalog. Unlimited is a larger plan
Same as Spotify?
No. Different account and locker
Feex says
If the family already pays Amazon for music, I would open this client instead of adding Spotify. I would not treat Amazon Music.exe as a local library scanner.

What is Amazon Music?

Amazon Music for Windows is Amazon’s official desktop player. Amazon Music.exe streams the catalog tied to your Amazon account.

If you have never used it

If your playlists live on an Amazon account or you already pay for Prime Music or Music Unlimited, this is the Windows client. Download it from Amazon’s music download page, not a random exe host. Sign in with Amazon. It is not Spotify. Discover Weekly is the other catalog. Local-file players like foobar2000 are a different job.

What is it used for?

Prime and Unlimited catalogs

Play what your Amazon plan includes. Spotify cannot see that locker. Apple Music cannot either.

Purchased Amazon tracks

Store purchases and auto-rips still show in Amazon’s client. That is not a foobar2000 folder scan.

Offline on a plan

Download albums the client allows. They stay licensed inside Amazon Music, not a DRM-free dump.

Who is it for?

  • People whose music plan is already on Amazon
  • Prime members who only want the included catalog
  • Anyone who should not install a “Amazon Music unlocked” setup

Current status

Amazon Music (2014) is a current music streaming from Amazon. The vendor still points Windows users at https://www.amazon.com/gp/dmusic/player/download.

How old is it?

Amazon shipped a desktop music client in the mid-2010s as Prime Music and later Music Unlimited grew. It is newer than iTunes 2001 and younger than Spotify’s 2008 service. A 2012 “Amazon MP3 downloader only” article is a different leftover tool.

Common problems

Wrong account tier

Prime Music is not the full Unlimited catalog. That is billing, not a broken decoder.

Stays in the tray

Close from the tray if you meant to quit. That is the desktop client, not Windows Audio.

Getting unstuck

Install from Amazon’s download page

The official Windows client is the one Amazon hosts. Search ads and unlocked builds are bait.

Sign in with the Amazon account that holds the plan

A different Amazon login will look empty. That is not a codec pack.

Toggle hardware acceleration if CPU stays high while paused

That is a player setting. Do not disable Windows Audio to fix Amazon Music.

Alternatives

Spotify or Apple Music if that is the catalog you already pay for. foobar2000 if you only have local files.
