What you need to know

Everything finds filenames fast. Windows Search indexes content.

voidtools Everything reads the NTFS master file table so name queries return immediately. It is not SearchIndexer.exe and it is not Start search. Download it from voidtools.com.

If Start search is slow and you only need a filename, I would try Everything before I rebuild the Windows Search catalog. It will not replace content search inside Outlook.

What is Everything?

Everything is a filename search tool. An optional Everything Service helps it read the MFT without a prompt. That is still not Windows Search.

If you have never used it

If you want a file by name and Start search feels slow, Everything is voidtools' instant NTFS search. Install it from voidtools.com. Type part of the filename. Results are names and paths, not a full-text index of PDFs. It is not Windows Search, not Listary, and not File Explorer search.

What is it used for?

Find a file by name

Type a piece of the filename. The MFT index is why this feels instant on NTFS.

Filter by path or extension

Operators live in the voidtools support pages. This is still name search, not Windows Search content filters.

Optional service for all users

The Everything Service lets the index run without an admin prompt. It is not SearchIndexer.exe.

People who remember part of a filename and not the folder
Technicians who are tired of waiting on Start search
Anyone who should not confuse this with a content indexer

Current status

Actively developed by voidtools. 1.4 is the long-lived stable. 1.5 is the alpha train they document separately.

How old is it?

Everything launched in 2008. It is not a Windows 11 feature and it is not the old Windows Desktop Search add-on. Current builds still target NTFS volumes first.

Startup components

Everything can start with Windows from its own Tools > Options > General. That is voidtools, not the Windows Search service.

People disable Windows Search because they installed this

Everything does not replace content search or Start web suggestions. Leave SearchIndexer alone unless you meant to.

Empty results on a network share

The MFT trick is local NTFS. Folder indexing for UNC paths is a setting, not a broken Windows Search catalog.

Ad pages named "Everything Search Pro" are not David Carpenter's tool. Windows Search is already on the PC if you wanted content search.

Run as administrator once, or install the Everything Service, if NTFS volumes stay empty

Reading the MFT needs permission. That is Everything, not a Start menu rebuild.

Exclude huge folders in Options if RAM grows with a file server mirror

The index holds names. Folders with millions of files cost memory. That is not Listary's Explorer hook.

Alternatives

Windows Search for content. Listary if you want a launcher that hooks Explorer. They are not drop-in Everything indexes.

Local NVMe makes the first MFT read faster. The tool still works on a spinning disk. It does not need a discrete GPU.
